This place is special to me because it’s the city where I arrived as an outsider, and left as a local. The map depicts “My Leeds” — the landmarks which helped me navigate the city when I first arrived as a university fresher, and the bars where I spent many incredible nights into early mornings. Known as “the London of the North”, Leeds grew out of Britain’s Industrial Revolution, and its rich, diverse history is reflected in the vibrant and eclectic city we see today. From elegant victorian shopping arcades and architectural splendour, to boozy bar-crawls and toe-tapping music venues, Leeds has plenty to offer the wide-eyed country boy when first moving away from home. No matter how many times I return to this city, there’s always a quirky new bar or restaurant to add to the extensive list of interesting places on offer, and although I may not currently live there, I always consider it to be home. Included in the map are not only the places, but the people who made this city an obvious, unquestioned choice for my favourite place — a place “where there’s music, and there’s people, and they’re young and alive” (The Smiths, 1986).

This place is special to me because it’s charm and delicious food stole my heart. One of the first things I saw in Charleston was a happy family of dolphins swimming in the harbor, which is something I had never seen before.  New experiences like the wildlife made me feel connected to this small city. As we looked over the menu at Fleet Landing I saw a heron outside who was also looking for its dinner. I wanted to make this map highlighting the food we had in Charleston because of the people behind the food who cared about what they cooked and the experience they provided. The restaurants and landmarks I illustrated are just some of the many great places Charleston has to offer.

The Culinary Charm of Charleston

This map highlights some of the landmarks and other gems to be found in one of Barcelona's most historic neighbourhoods. Discover great spots for drinks or tapas or local shopping while navigating from the Palau de la Musica, to the Arc de Triomf, the Picasso Museum, the Santa Maria Del Mar Basilica and the charming streets in between. Some call it El Born some call it La Ribera... maybe even Sant Pere, but everyone can agree it's the best area in Barcelona!

Clinton Hill is a treelined Brooklyn neighborhood where artists, writers, makers, students and creatives have lived throughout history, and continue to make their marks today. Spaces for creating, thinking, and collaborating dot the map, creating an atmosphere that's ever-evolving against a backdrop of historic brick row houses and brownstones.

My map depicts the many cafes and community spaces that celebrate the arts, and even a few places that do both (like the women-run Relationships cafe and Playground Coffee Shop). These are places where you can sip coffee surrounded by modern art, places that imagine a more intentionally-designed food system, shops with vintage clothing and furniture, destinations for modern art and music, and even a few historic (maybe unofficial) arts landmarks. It's a special place that has fueled my creativity for years, and I hope you'll find some inspiration here, too.

Alexander Samuel MacLeod was a painter and printmaker. He was born on Prince Edward Island, Canada. After moving to San Francisco, he continued his artistic training at the California School of Design under Frank Van Sloun.

In 1921, MacLeod arrived in Hawaii, where he worked in the art departments of the magazine Paradise of the Pacific and the local papers, The Honolulu Advertiser and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. By 1929, he had returned to Canada and resided there for ten years. Again in Hawaii, MacLeod became the director of the graphic art department for the United States Army in the Pacific.

In 1943, he published a book of his Hawaiian prints, The Spirit of Hawaii, Before and After Pearl Harbor. MacLeod retired to Palo Alto, California, where he died in 1956.

Scenes are amazing vignettes and insets of life in Honolulu. An inset piece in center has written: "In this map you will find depicted in pictorial fashion the history, landmarks & customs of these colorful isles. A map of Honolulu and the Sandwich Islands which we know call the Hawaiian Islands."

From Charles W. Upham's Salem Witchcraft, With an Account of Salem Village and a History of Opinions on Witchcraft and Kindred Spirits (1867).
This map shows the locations of major landmarks, farms, land grants, physical features, and the dwellings of prominent and important residents in Salem during 1692.

W.P. Upham, brother to author Charles, researched and drew the map. In his notes to the volume, Charles Upham included some details about how land grants were located and drawn, but is largely silent about how his brother located the dwellings of the major actors in the Salem narrative:

The map, based upon various local maps and the Coast-Survey chart, is the result of much personal exploration and perambulation on the ground. It may claim to be a very exact representation of many of the original grants and farms. The locality of these houses, mills, and bridges, in 1692, is given in some cases precisely, and in all with near approximation. The locations of then-existing roads have been obtained from the returns of laying-out committees, and other evidence in the records and files. The construction of the map, in all its details, is the result of the researches and labors of W. P. Upham.

Pictorial map, mounted on board 74x82, depicting the geography, history and landmarks of the Main Line, western suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Shows rail line, counties, towns, major roads, landmarks, rivers and streams. Title cartouche shows a pair of Native Americans from the Lenape tribe on one side and George Washington on the other. The compass rose is created from the intersection of an arrow and a tomahawk with a rifle and a sword. Include numerous illustrations with descriptive text showing history of the region related to the Colonial era and the Revolutionary War, and locations of important events and brief biographies of historical figures. Border around the map are vignettes of detailed drawings of historic buildings and people.

Along the Rhine, Germany’s defensive Siegfried Line is shown. The English Channel separating England and France is shown defended by the Dover Patrol, comprised not only of ships as in WWI, but also aircraft. The map’s border is particularly striking, with images of aircraft across the top, warships across the bottom, and heavy artillery and tanks in the margins right and left. Shows rivers, mountains, landmarks, major cities and towns. Relief shown pictorially and by shadings. Includes distances.
