北白川

後水尾上皇が造営した、王朝文化の美意識の溢れる「修学院離宮」や、北隣には京都御所の鬼門を守る赤山禅院、ならびに門跡寺院の曼殊院、山荘の詩仙堂など、数多くの名所があることで知られる修学院地区は、比叡山の西麓の風光明媚な地域です。比叡山に連なるこの付近の峰々には、戦国期にいくつかの山城が築かれました。また、この山裾には縄文時代から人が住み、生活が営まれた地域でもありました。赤山禅院、曼殊院から小説『宮本武蔵』でよく知られる一乗寺地区を巡り、北白川地域まで、沿道の寺社や景観を散策するコースを紹介します。

 12世紀近くなると、平安京は鴨川を越えて東へと延びて行きます。現在、岡崎地区には美術館等の文化的施設が多く、琵琶湖疏水や寺社ならびに多くの別荘庭園等が点在しています。 平安時代後期の白河上皇が院庁で政治を行う院政期になると、東国から京に入る人々に都ぶりを見せつけるような六勝寺等が建てられ、「白河」の地が整備されました。 遺跡の地を巡り、京都観光のメッカともいえる岡崎・白川の風光明媚な見所を歩きます。

京都御苑には平安時代から明治維新まで多くの公家邸宅がありました。また、平安時代中期には、二条大路が京外の鴨川を越えて延長され、白河に院政の地が広がります。豊臣秀吉の時代に寺町通に寺院が集められ寺院街となります。また、明治時代以後には近代教育と学問の発祥地となります。歴史と史跡･文化財の多い京都御苑東北、寺町と二条通、吉田山西麓を歩き、周辺の見所をご紹介します。
