The compass rose is created from the intersection of an arrow and a tomahawk with a rifle and a sword. Hyde Park is one of the most desirable neighborhoods of modern Austin. The legacy of its settlement and growth reminds one of the important role Hyde Park has played in the history of Austin.

An early promotional map of Hyde Park reveals Shipe's layout of the new neighborhood. Drawn by noted map maker Augustus Koch, who prepared "bird's eye" maps of many Texas cities including Austin, Cuero and Victoria, it depicts a grid pattern of tree-lined streets. The west side of the development was dominated by a large park in the area bounded by present-day Guadalupe, West 38th, Avenue D and West 43rd streets. A "Railway Car Barn" for the Austin Rapid Transit Railway Co., the city's streetcar line, was shown near the southwest corner of Avenue D and Third (now 40th) Street. Two separate man-made bodies of water are labeled Gem Lake and Crystal Fountain. Frequently mentioned among the amenities Hyde Park offered, the lakes were drained in the mid-1890s to provide additional land for residential use as part of the effort to develop Hyde Park Addition No. 2.

Historical map American Expeditionary Force

Unusual and elegant design incorporating Aztec symbols. Emily Edwards was a noted artist of the period. Intended in part as a functional representation of the Mexico City Transit and Power System, the map is a remarkable work of historical and cultural value, celebrated in modern times as one of the most important images of post Revolution Mexico City. While Edwards intended to faithfully represent the tram and lighting system, embellished by historical images of the City, the map also incorporates Mexican cultural traditions, superimposed over an image of Cuauhtémoc, the final Aztec ruler and one of the most iconic Mexican historical images.

From Charles W. Upham's Salem Witchcraft, With an Account of Salem Village and a History of Opinions on Witchcraft and Kindred Spirits (1867).
This map shows the locations of major landmarks, farms, land grants, physical features, and the dwellings of prominent and important residents in Salem during 1692.

W.P. Upham, brother to author Charles, researched and drew the map. In his notes to the volume, Charles Upham included some details about how land grants were located and drawn, but is largely silent about how his brother located the dwellings of the major actors in the Salem narrative:

The map, based upon various local maps and the Coast-Survey chart, is the result of much personal exploration and perambulation on the ground. It may claim to be a very exact representation of many of the original grants and farms. The locality of these houses, mills, and bridges, in 1692, is given in some cases precisely, and in all with near approximation. The locations of then-existing roads have been obtained from the returns of laying-out committees, and other evidence in the records and files. The construction of the map, in all its details, is the result of the researches and labors of W. P. Upham.

The Great War Map

This is a rare and often underappreciated 1606 mapping New Spain by Hondius and Mercator.  Covering the viceroyalty granted to Hernan Cortez following his conquest of the Aztec Empire, this map details, roughly, from  Mexico City westward to the Pacific coast and northward as far as modern-day Michoacán.  

Cartographically Mercator's map is heavily influenced by Ortelius' 1579 map of the same region.  Though we are uncertain of Ortelius' sources, this map exhibits a combination of known and speculative cartographic elements.  Mexico City appears at right center surrounded by water as it appeared at the time of the conquest.  By the time this map was drawn, much of the region between Mexico City and the Pacific ports along the coast, as well as the mining regions to the north and west, had been roughly mapped by the conquistadores.  

Lake Chapala (Chapalicum Mare) for example is accurately situated and formed.  However, as the map extends further north into only tenuously explored regions, the cartography becomes more speculative.  The large inland sea in the northwestern quadrant with is four numbered and named islands is clearly drawn from indigenous legends, most likely as transmitted via the Codex Mendoza. In Yoshizaki, there is Chitoseyama, commonly known as 'Gozan'. In 1471, Rennyo, the founder of the Pure Land sect of Buddhism, established a missionary base here, which was visited by many followers and came to be known as 'Yoshizaki Gobo'. Centred on this mountain, the Yoshizaki area of Awara City is home to various historical sites and is an attractive place with a peaceful atmosphere from season to season.

The mountaineering trails of Asamagatake, known since ancient times as a sacred site of Shugendo, allow visitors to walk through a mountainous area surrounded by beautiful nature and visit historical shrines and Buddhist temples. Hikone Castle is located in Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture, and was constructed in the early Edo period. It is designated as a National Treasure of Japan, known for its robust structure and beautiful appearance. This map offers a detailed view of the Tottori castle town's layout during the early modern period. It covers the entire area of the castle town and uses color-coding to distinguish between different zones: samurai residences (in red), merchant quarters (in gray), and temple and shrine districts (in white). The map’s dating can be approximated due to the inclusion of Tottori Tōshōgū Shrine, which was established in the third year of the Keian era (1650), along with the road leading to it, marked by pasted paper annotations.

The map’s dimensions are 285 by 320 cm, providing a comprehensive perspective on the spatial organization of Tottori's castle town and its distinct functional areas during the early Edo period. This map serves as a valuable historical resource, shedding light on the town’s social and structural layout at that time.

Tourist map of Marfa, Texas.  Marfa is a city in the high desert of the Trans-Pecos in far West Texas, between the Davis Mountains and Big Bend National Park. It is the county seat of Presidio County, and its population as of the 2010 United States Census was 1,981. The city was founded in the early 1880s as a water stop; the population increased during World War II, but the growth stalled and reversed somewhat during the late 20th century. Today, Marfa is a tourist destination and a major center for minimalist art. Nara Park is one of Japan's most famous tourist attractions, where history and nature are in harmony.
