Summer time in northern Michigan is full of adventure! I love crossing the Mighty Mac to go hiking in the Upper Peninsula (officially called The U.P.) or cruising on a ferry to Mackinac Island. The island does not allow vehicles, but the best way to explore is on bike or horse carriage. Plus all the water activities provide plenty of fun. The winters are long and the summers are short..so spending as much time on the Great Lakes is my favorite place!

The Mozu Tumulus Group, located in Sakai City, Osaka, is one of the most famous burial mounds in Japan. It is said that there used to be more than 100 burial mounds, and 44 of them still remain today. The main tumuli are the Nintoku-tennō-ryō tumulus, the largest front-recessed circular tomb in Japan, and the Rinchū-tennō-ryō tumulus across Daisen Park; the Itasuke, Gobyozan, and Nisanzai tumuli on the east side; and the Antishō-tennō-ryō tumulus on the north side. As the "Mozu and Furuichi Kofun Tumulus Group," it will be registered as Osaka's first World Heritage Site in 2019.

<body>A beautiful, early map of Philadelphia in full period color. The scale is given at 75 Perches to 1 inch. The city is shown from the Delaware River to the Schuylkil River with the environs on the north and south. 24 lettered references and 28 numbered references to important places and buildings are below the title and 24 wards are keyed in Roman numbers above the title. Many of the country houses and farms around the city are named, including Penn, Dr. Wistar, and other notable early residents. Three inset views show City Hall, the State House, Court House, Library, and Bank of the United States. The tile is surrounded by a decorative cartouche. The quality of the engraving is superb. Ristow mentions an undated edition that was possibly issued in the year Varle made the surveys, 1796, but more likely in 1802. Wheat and Brun list a c.1794 State I that has one less numbered building reference, no Roman numbered ward references, and "R. Scott Sculp. Philadelphia." This was Varle's first map published in the United States. Until 1807, Varle was known as Peter C. Varle; after 1807 he is known as Charles P. Varle.</body>

A map of some of my favorite spots on northern Öland, an island and a county in the south of Sweden. I spend my summers here and always miss it everytime I have to leave – it's the garden, the cottages, the barns, the beaches, the sea, the landscape. Evening bike rides between corn fields, or getting fresh cranberry scones from the bakery in the mornings, our dog trying to "rescue" all of us as we swim and play in the sea. 
The golden deer is the symbol of the flag of Öland, and nightingale is the county's animal. The small island just outside of Öland, called The Blue Maiden, is thought to be a magic place in Swedish folklore, it's where the witches were believed to meet up ...

My favorite place in the summer

This is a rare and often underappreciated 1606 mapping New Spain by Hondius and Mercator.  Covering the viceroyalty granted to Hernan Cortez following his conquest of the Aztec Empire, this map details, roughly, from  Mexico City westward to the Pacific coast and northward as far as modern-day Michoacán.  

Cartographically Mercator's map is heavily influenced by Ortelius' 1579 map of the same region.  Though we are uncertain of Ortelius' sources, this map exhibits a combination of known and speculative cartographic elements.  Mexico City appears at right center surrounded by water as it appeared at the time of the conquest.  By the time this map was drawn, much of the region between Mexico City and the Pacific ports along the coast, as well as the mining regions to the north and west, had been roughly mapped by the conquistadores.  

Lake Chapala (Chapalicum Mare) for example is accurately situated and formed.  However, as the map extends further north into only tenuously explored regions, the cartography becomes more speculative.  The large inland sea in the northwestern quadrant with is four numbered and named islands is clearly drawn from indigenous legends, most likely as transmitted via the Codex Mendoza.  Elaborate baroque title cartouche in the upper right quadrant.

Texas Centennial Exposition 1830-1936

A very interesting 1853 (Kaei 6) Japanese world map by Suido Nakajima. Presented on a cylindrical projection, this map marks a significant advancement in Japanese globular cartography and a far more sophisticated adaptation of western cartographic standards than is evidenced in most earlier Japanese world maps. No longer reliant on 17th century Dutch maps acquired via the Dutch East India Company’s (VOC) trade concession in Nagasaki, the Japanese have here abandoned many of the antiquated cartographic notions, such as an insular California, which were common in Japanese maps of the previous decade. Japanese cartographers may have been motivated to update their traditional world view in the light of the explosion of cartographic ideas associated with the arrival in Edo Harbor of the American Commodore Matthew Perry in the same year this map was published. As a whole this map offers a sophisticated cartographic presentation of the world embracing the most up to date cartographic knowledge available in the mid-19th century. Though adapted to the Japanese printing style, this map presents a generally accurate world view. British Claims to Washington and British Columbia are noted in North America, Australia and the Pacific are accurately rendered, as are the discoveries of Vitus Bering and James Cook in the Arctic, and Africa is clearly pre-Speke. The disputed East Sea / Sea of Japan / Sea of Korea is here labeled as the Sea of Joseon (Korea), which some scholars suggests indicates Japanese acceptance of the “Sea of Korea” convention. Four hemispheres appear in the lower left quadrant, from left, the southern, northern, eastern, and western. All are on a stereographic projection. The map is printed on woodblock and hand colored in vivid, blues, greens, oranges, and yellows. A fine example of the redefined Japanese cartography style of the later Tokugawa period.
