An Edo-period (1603–1868) tea house from the Toyota family home in Imai-cho, Kashihara City was moved here during modern times. It is registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. It is a richly formulated structure with roofs of bronze shingles. Internally it includes a large room the size of eight tatami mats, a small room and a tea ceremony-preparation area. Beside the Sakai City Museum in Daisen Park are two tea rooms that are registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan, the Sakai City Tea Rooms Ōbai-an, and Shin-an. They are connected by a tea-house garden. It is free to view the garden, which includes the nationally designated Important Cultural Property of a nine-layered tower of the former Jyodo-ji Temple. The mid-Edo Period tea house is from the Toyota family's home in Imai-cho in Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture. It later belonged to Yasuzaemon Matsunaga, who helped develop Japan's electric power industry throughout his life from 1875 to 1971. He was also a tea master under the name Jian and known as one of the top four tea masters. The tea house that he loved was donated here in 1980. Jian named the tearoom, which is written with characters meaning yellow plum, based on its having been completed at the time of year when plum fruit ripens yellow. It is a richly formulated structure with roofs of bronze shingles. Internally it includes a large room the size of eight tatami mats, a small room and a tea ceremony-preparation area. There is an alcove at the front of the large room and instead of a ceiling, the underbelly of the roof can be seen in this example of the sukiya architectural style. The small room is made up of three tatami mats in a row. The alcove is located toward the rear of the tea master and the hearth is placed closer to the guests, in the mukogiri position. It was said to be the tea house of Sokyu Imai when it was in the Toyota home, but its architectural style means it is difficult to trace it to that time and the year of its construction, and other details, are unknown. However, the historical value of this tea house is further enhanced by this suggestion of a connection to the father and son Sakai City tea masters Sokyu Imai and Sokun Imai, as well as by its relocation and use by Jian. This tea house was built by a master craftsperson of sukiya-style buildings, Rodo Ogi. It was relocated from Tokyo's Shiba Park and is registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. It is partially two-storied and has S-shaped pantile roofing. It includes an entryway, large rooms, tea rooms and tatami rooms. With 10 Japanese-style rooms, it can hold large tea gatherings for many people. They are connected by a tea-house garden. It is free to view the garden, which includes the nationally designated Important Cultural Property of a nine-layered tower of the former Jyodo-ji Temple. Shin-an was built in 1929 by Rodo Ogi, who is considered a master craftsperson of sukiya-style buildings. It was previously located in Shiba Park in Tokyo. It was moved here in 1980 as a donation from Fukuske Corporation. It is partially two-storied and has S-shaped pantile roofing. An entryway, large rooms, tea rooms and tatami rooms are situated around an inner garden. It has a characteristic layout that combines different tatami mat sizes from the Tokyo, Nagoya and Kyoto regions, and uses a variety of styles of supporting posts in key places, including rounded or square lumber and timber that retain its bark. While following the traditional tea room format of three tatami mats in a row plus one for the tea master, a modern feel with a more open environment for guests' seating is created through joint use of the entrance for nobility. The building has ten Japanese-style rooms, including the tea rooms, which enables it to hold tea gatherings for large numbers of people. Tea services are also held using tables and chairs, so you can easily enjoy a bowl of matcha tea. Its front end faces south. It is currently managed by the Imperial Household Agency as the tomb of Emperor Hanzei and the north tomb of the three "Mozu-no-mimihara" imperial tombs. The grave mound is about 148 meters long. The diameter of its rear, rounded section is about 76 meters and its height is about 13 meters. The width of the front section is about 110 meters and its height is about 15 meters. It is the seventh largest of the Mozu group of burial mounds. It is about one-third the size of the burial tomb of Emperor Nintoku. It is small for an emperor's tomb, but the reason for this is not known. The grave mound was built in three layers, and based on that shape and the haniwa (clay figures that were buried with the dead) that were excavated there, it is thought to have been constructed around the middle of the 5th century. It is currently surrounded by a single moat in the shape of a shield, but excavation in the area has confirmed that there had previously been a double-layered moat here. Built around the middle of the 5th century, with a length of about 486 meters, this is Japan's largest keyhole-shaped kofun burial mound. It is one of the world's three greatest tombs, together with the Great Pyramid of Giza built for Pharoah Kufuh, and the tomb of the first Qin emperor of China. It is one of the three "Mozu-no-mimihara" tombs. Its grave mound was built in three layers, it is surrounded by three moats, and it contains more than 10 subsidiary burial mounds. It is said to be one of the three greatest tombs in the world, together with the Great Pyramid of Giza built for Pharoah Kufuh, and the tomb of the first Qin emperor of China. From above it looks like a circle combined with a square to form a burial mound in the uniquely Japanese keyhole shape. It is estimated to have been constructed around the middle of the 5th century and to have taken about 20 years to build. It is Japan's largest keyhole-shaped burial mound. Together with the burial mound of Emperor Hanzei (Tadeiyama burial mound) to the north, and the burial mound of Emperor Richu (Misanzai burial mound) to the south, it is known as one of the three "Mozu-no-mimihara" imperial tombs. It is currently managed by the Imperial Household Agency as the middle of those three, and as the tomb of Emperor Nintoku. The front section of the grave mound faces south. The tumulus's entire length is about 486 meters. The diameter of the rear, rounded section is about 249 meters and its height is about 35.8 meters. The width of the front section is about 307 meters, its height is about 33.9 meters and it is formed by three layers. There are protruding sections on both sides of the "neck" area. It is surrounded by three moats, the outer of which was re-dug in the Meiji period (1968–1912). It has fukiishi stones that cover the mound like shingles and haniwa clay figures that were buried with the dead. Figures in the shape of people (with female heads), water birds, horses, deer, and houses have been excavated. During investigations from around 1955 and more recently, Sue ware pots were excavated from the protruding sections, providing further evidence of when the burial mound was created. In 1872, a long, stone coffin placed in a pit-type stone burial chamber in the front section was opened, and a sword, armor, and glass pots and plates were excavated. These artifacts were reburied, but detailed illustrations of them were recorded and the armor was a beautiful gilt bronze. As befitting of Japan's largest keyhole-shaped burial mound, there are more than 10 subsidiary burial mounds around it. It is referred to as the burial mound of Emperor Nintoku, but it was built after the burial mound of Emperor Richu was, which is opposite to the order of their reigns mentioned in the Nihon Shoki record of history and other ancient documents, which give the order as Emperor Nintoku, then Emperor Richu. It is located at the south-east end of the Mozu group of burial mounds. With a length of about 300 meters, it is the seventh largest of Japan's keyhole-shaped tombs. The wide breadth of the front section means it is considered the most exquisite of the burial mounds. It is also the newest, being constructed in the latter part of the 5th century. The name "Nisanzai" is thought to have been derived from a word meaning imperial tomb, which is "misasagi." It is a large keyhole-shaped burial mound in the south-east of the Mozu group of burial mounds and its front section faces west. The mound is about 300 meters long. The diameter of its rear, rounded section is about 170 meters and its height is about 24.6 meters. The width of the front section is about 224 meters and its height is about 25.9 meters. The mound was constructed in three layers and has protruding sections on each side of its "neck" area. The construction of the main burial section and the burial accessories are unknown, but it has fukiishi stones that cover the mound like shingles and haniwa clay figures that were buried with the dead. It is currently surrounded by one moat in the shape of a shield, but excavation work carried out in 1976 found that it also has an external moat. Examination of the moat that was conducted in 2012 found part of a wooden bridge over the moat, which became a very important discovery in terms of the burial mound's external facilities and burial rituals. Because the front section of the burial mound is wide and imposing, with a sense of stability, folklore suggests that this is the tomb of Emperor Hanzei. The Imperial Household Agency has designated the burial mound as an area where an emperor or member of the imperial family may have been buried and the agency manages it. "Nisanzai" is thought to have been derived from a word for imperial tomb, "misasagi." The wide breadth of the front section means it is considered the most exquisite of the burial mounds. This huge keyhole-shaped burial mound is located in Ishizugaoka. It is about 365 meters long and is Japan's third-largest burial mound. It is older than the burial mound of Emperor Nintoku, having been constructed around the first half of the 5th century. It is one of the three "Mozu-no-mimihara" imperial tombs and is also known as the "Mozu-no-mimihara" southern imperial tomb, and as the Misanzai burial mound. Among the Mozu group of burial mounds, it is the next largest keyhole-shaped burial mound after that of Emperor Nintoku (Daisen burial mound) and is known to have had about 10 subsidiary burial mounds. Excavated materials and other sources have shown that, from among them, the Shichikanyama burial mound is older than the Emperor Nintoku burial mound, having been created around the first half of the 5th century. The burial mound is about 365 meters long. The diameter of its rear, rounded section is about 205 meters and its height is about 27.6 meters. The width of the front section is about 235 meters and its height is about 25.3 meters. It is a large keyhole-shaped burial mound and is Japan's third largest. The front section of it is located in Ishizugaoka and faces south. The mound was constructed in three layers and has a protruding section on the west side of its "neck" area. Details such as the construction of the main burial section and the burial accessories are unknown, but it has fukiishi stones that cover the mound like shingles and haniwa clay figures that were buried with the dead. It is surrounded by a single moat and embankment in the shape of a shield, but in 1994 a second, outer moat with a width of about 10 meters was discovered. According to records from the Edo period (1603–1868), there was a large hollow in the middle of the rear, rounded section, suggesting that it may have already been subject to grave robbing. It is currently managed by the Imperial Household Agency as the tomb of Emperor Richu and as the south tomb of the three "Mozu-no-mimihara" imperial tombs. It is located in the middle of the Mozu group of burial mounds and is the eighth-largest keyhole-shaped tomb designated by Japan as a historic site. Helmeted haniwa (clay figures that were buried with the dead) excavated from here have become the logo of the city's preservation of cultural property. It is a keyhole-shaped burial mound located near the middle of the Mozu group of burial mounds, and its front section faces west. There are a number of mounds around it that are considered to be subsidiary burial mounds. It is believed to have been constructed in the early 5th century. It is about 146 meters long. The diameter of the rear, rounded section is about 90 meters, and it is about 12.2 meters tall. The front section is about 99 meters wide and is about 11.4 meters tall. The mound is constructed in three layers and has a protruding section on the southern area of the "neck" section. It has fukiishi stones that cover the mound like shingles and haniwa clay figures that were buried with the dead. Haniwa clay figures with helmets structured like a ship's keel have been excavated from the rear, rounded section. Because it is located at the south end of a plateau, a large embankment is built on the south side of the moat. Around 1955 this burial mound was almost destroyed in order to construct housing, but it was preserved thanks to campaigning by citizens. Located on the boundary of the three former provinces of Kawachi, Izumi and Settsu, this shrine was considered a pure land without direction and is known as a place of prayer related to avoiding misfortune associated with movement. In ancient times there was a custom in which, if the direction you were due to set off for on a long-distance journey was inauspicious, you would initially embark in a different direction. Hochigai Shrine is unusual throughout Japan as a shrine to visit in such a case. Based on the legend that if one worships here before a long-distance journey or when moving house they will not meet with misfortune, many people come from all around to pray for protection from ill fate when building a house or moving house. The purification sand that is here and the chimaki rice cake wrapped in bamboo leaves that prevent disasters related to movement are said to be quite potent. During the traditional Chimaki Festival on May 31 shrine visitors are given rice cake wrapped in leaves of the Manchurian wild rice. The festival is affectionately referred to as "Hochigai-san." On the old shrine grounds there is an evergreen Kurogane Holly tree, which usually grow in warm regions. This one has the largest diameter and trunk circumference from among even the more than 40 other such trees in the city, and has been designated by Osaka Prefecture as a natural monument due to its great size and considerable age. The shrine is also known for the Futon Taiko autumn festival held in mid-September in which a large float containing a taiko drum is carried through the streets. The Mozu Hachiman Shrine is situated in the middle of the World Heritage Site Mozu ancient burial mounds. Emperor Ojin is its main god and its grounds contain shrines with ancient history and tradition that revere Emperor Nintoku and the three gods of creation. It is said that during the reign of Emperor Kinmei around the middle of the 6th century, a divine message was received from the god Hachiman and the shrine was built here as a prayer for the peace of the nation. The shrine grounds spread over about 30,000 square meters and include many trees designated for preservation. Among them, in front of the main shrine building is a huge camphor tree with a circumference of 5.2 meters and a height of 25 meters that is about 800 years old. Osaka Prefecture has designated it a natural monument and the sight of its foliage spreading in all directions delights viewers. The annual Moon-viewing Festival held on the Saturday and Sunday closest to the timing of the harvest moon (August 15 in Japan's old calendar) is a religious festival that combines the custom of praying for a bountiful harvest and celebration of the full moon. During the day, the red of the Futon Taiko float presented to the shrine by nine local parishioner communities stands out against the green of the huge trees, and at night it is lit up and sightseers are delighted by the intensity of the lively splendor of the procession.
