Kapana is a small walkable district in the town of Plovdiv. Its history dates back to the 16th century, when it was the merchant and crafts center of Plovdiv. A few of its streets are actually named after the craftsmen that practiced there for centuries: Zhelezarska Str. (Blacksmith Str.), Zlatarska Str. (Goldsmith Str.), Abadjiyska Str. (Coat-Tailor Str.), Kozhuharska Str. (Fur-Tailor Str.). The name itself (Kapana) means “trap” or “labyrinth”. And it’s well-deserved too — one can easily get lost in its cobblestoned streets that always meet at peculiar angles. Having lost its liveliness since the mid-20th century (the streets being mostly packed with parked cars), in the past few years the neighborhood has been revived again, largely thanks to Plovdiv's nomination for the European Capital of Culture 2019. Today Kapana is the colorful heart of Plovdiv — a social place with an artistic spirit and unique atmosphere.

Situated in the midst of hills and vineyards Stuttgart offers the most beautiful views over the city from higher vantage points – to experience a tour of Art + Music one can just stay in the center and take a walk. I have drawn some famous sites and some personal recommendations such as a trendy jazz club and the café Teehaus. Don’t forget to eat a an iconic bretzel with butter!

Tourist map of Marfa, Texas.  Marfa is a city in the high desert of the Trans-Pecos in far West Texas, between the Davis Mountains and Big Bend National Park. It is the county seat of Presidio County, and its population as of the 2010 United States Census was 1,981. The city was founded in the early 1880s as a water stop; the population increased during World War II, but the growth stalled and reversed somewhat during the late 20th century. Today, Marfa is a tourist destination and a major center for minimalist art. Attractions include Building 98, the Chinati Foundation, artisan shops, historical architecture, a classic Texas town square, modern art installments, art galleries, and the Marfa lights

This place is special to me because these are all of my favorite hiding spots during the cold months of winter. My map is filled with some of my very favorite comfort foods and places to stop for a tea or coffee. I also like visiting the botanical center or Jordan's Jungles so I can start dreaming of spring and what I will plant in my garden.

The present example is an early state of the plan. There is an earlier edition of 1783 and later editions of 1789, 1792, 1794, 1801 and 1802. The later editions apparently have significant revisions, especially those issued after 1793.

Alexander Samuel MacLeod was a painter and printmaker. He was born on Prince Edward Island, Canada. After moving to San Francisco, he continued his artistic training at the California School of Design under Frank Van Sloun. 
 
In 1921, MacLeod arrived in Hawaii, where he worked in the art departments of the magazine Paradise of the Pacific and the local papers, The Honolulu Advertiser and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. By 1929, he had returned to Canada and resided there for ten years. Again in Hawaii, MacLeod became the director of the graphic art department for the United States Army in the Pacific. 
 
In 1943, he published a book of his Hawaiian prints, The Spirit of Hawaii, Before and After Pearl Harbor. MacLeod retired to Palo Alto, California, where he died in 1956. 
 
Scenes are amazing vignettes and insets of life in Honolulu. An inset piece in center has written: "In this map you will find depicted in pictorial fashion the history, landmarks & customs of these colorful isles. A map of Honolulu and the Sandwich Islands which we know call the Hawaiian Islands."

Illustrated Map of Mexico City

This is a rare and often underappreciated 1606 mapping New Spain by Hondius and Mercator.  Covering the viceroyalty granted to Hernan Cortez following his conquest of the Aztec Empire, this map details, roughly, from  Mexico City westward to the Pacific coast and northward as far as modern-day Michoacán.  

Cartographically Mercator's map is heavily influenced by Ortelius' 1579 map of the same region.  Though we are uncertain of Ortelius' sources, this map exhibits a combination of known and speculative cartographic elements.  Mexico City appears at right center surrounded by water as it appeared at the time of the conquest.  By the time this map was drawn, much of the region between Mexico City and the Pacific ports along the coast, as well as the mining regions to the north and west, had been roughly mapped by the conquistadores.  

Lake Chapala (Chapalicum Mare) for example is accurately situated and formed.  However, as the map extends further north into only tenuously explored regions, the cartography becomes more speculative.  The large inland sea in the northwestern quadrant with is four numbered and named islands is clearly drawn from indigenous legends, most likely as transmitted via the Codex Mendoza.  Elaborate baroque title cartouche in the upper right quadrant.

Colored copy. Panoramic view centers on France and Germany but includes, at its borders, portions of England, France, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden and other European nations. Along the Rhine, Germany’s defensive Siegfried Line is shown. The English Channel separating England and France is shown defended by the Dover Patrol, comprised not only of ships as in WWI, but also aircraft. The map’s border is particularly striking, with images of aircraft across the top, warships across the bottom, and heavy artillery and tanks in the margins right and left. Shows rivers, mountains, landmarks, major cities and towns. Relief shown pictorially and by shadings. Includes distances.

Take a tour of Revolutionary Paris, the home of the last queen of France, Marie Antoinette. Begin your tour at Versailles, a city within a palace, to witness the splendor of court life. Visit Tuileries Gardens where once stood the palace where the King and Queen were under house arrest. The Louvre used to hold the royal treasures, but became a museum during the Revolution. Eat at Café Procope, the oldest cafe in Paris, where the leaders Danton, Robespierre, and Marat met to discuss plans. You can eat at several establishments which serve Marie's favorite pastries, pistoles chocolates, and apple tea. Drive by and see the architecture, or visit the other sites which represent the more vivid parts of the revolutionary war that were inevitable, the change which was necessary to bring representation to all classes of people. Finish your tour by driving north to St. Denis Basilica, where the remains of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette are interred. This map was inspired by Antonia Fraser's book, Marie Antoinette: The Journey.
