Coffee on the Coast in the San Francisco Bay Area with Nate Padavick

This is a rare and often underappreciated 1606 mapping New Spain by Hondius and Mercator.  Covering the viceroyalty granted to Hernan Cortez following his conquest of the Aztec Empire, this map details, roughly, from  Mexico City westward to the Pacific coast and northward as far as modern-day Michoacán.  

Cartographically Mercator's map is heavily influenced by Ortelius' 1579 map of the same region.  Though we are uncertain of Ortelius' sources, this map exhibits a combination of known and speculative cartographic elements.  Mexico City appears at right center surrounded by water as it appeared at the time of the conquest.  By the time this map was drawn, much of the region between Mexico City and the Pacific ports along the coast, as well as the mining regions to the north and west, had been roughly mapped by the conquistadores.  

Lake Chapala (Chapalicum Mare) for example is accurately situated and formed.  However, as the map extends further north into only tenuously explored regions, the cartography becomes more speculative.  The large inland sea in the northwestern quadrant with is four numbered and named islands is clearly drawn from indigenous legends, most likely as transmitted via the Codex Mendoza. This place is special to me because I'm in awe that such a little strip of coastline can hold all this abundance of wildlife and wonder. In one stroll you can experience ALL the weather, hike the trails, swim or enjoy the ocean, shop for eclectic local wares, eat home made food, and drink a locally brewed beverage. My children often have their classes on the sand dunes or watching the salmon spawn in the fall. I'm very grateful to live here.

A Day in Davis Bay

Kerala, located in the south of India, is a land of rich green paddies, rivers and lagoons. It's often termed as " God's Own Country". The coastal plain is bordered on the east by a range of mountains in which spices such as pepper, cinnamon, ginger and cardamom are grown for export. And this has attracted traders from all over the world. Fort Kochi is one such town in Kerala, which was ruled by the Portuguese from 1503 to 1682, followed by the Dutch till 1795, and then the British until the year India became independent. It is also home to the oldest European church in India which housed the gravestone of the explorer Vasco da Gama. The Kochi-Muziris Biennale, the largest art exhibition in India and the biggest contemporary art festival in Asia is held in this little heritage town.This is a heritage map taking you on a trail through the various historic structures, hidden cafes, boutique hotels and stores and the main streets of the city.

This map shows the locations of major landmarks, farms, land grants, physical features, and the dwellings of prominent and important residents in Salem during 1692.

W.P. Upham, brother to author Charles, researched and drew the map. In his notes to the volume, Charles Upham included some details about how land grants were located and drawn, but is largely silent about how his brother located the dwellings of the major actors in the Salem narrative:

The map, based upon various local maps and the Coast-Survey chart, is the result of much personal exploration and perambulation on the ground. It may claim to be a very exact representation of many of the original grants and farms. The locality of these houses, mills, and bridges, in 1692, is given in some cases precisely, and in all with near approximation. The locations of then-existing roads have been obtained from the returns of laying-out committees, and other evidence in the records and files. The construction of the map, in all its details, is the result of the researches and labors of W. P. Upham.

I live in a beautiful coastal town on the east coast of Australia, 4 hours north of Sydney. There are lots of walks and places to see amazing native vegetation in the surrounding areas but my favourite is the one that follows the coast, and in the right time of the year you can even spot the annual whale migration.

Shen Zhen is a beautiful lovely seaside city in the southeast of China. It lies along the coast of the South China Sea and immediately north of Hong Kong.

Missing the good weather there especially in the winter of New York.

This place is special to me because yes, I am a banana slug! I went to university in Santa Cruz and lived there a few years after as well. There is lots to do in this cute town - hiking, mountain biking, kayaking and surfing. Of course you can also relax on the beach or ride the Giant Dipper rollercoaster at the Boardwalk. There are also lots of tasty eats in town which I didn't include on this map. I guess I need to do another one! :)

The Shoalhaven is a special place to me because it's one of the most magical place in the world and it has changed my life! I have met people there that have been so inspiring and I've experienced so many great things that it literally influenced the way I live today. I've been living a nomadic life for 6 years now travelling across 4 continents and nowhere else in the world have I seen so many pristine beaches and native wildlife in such a small area. Can you believe there are more than 100 beaches in less than 160km (100miles) of coast?! And how about meeting kangaroos, wombats, cockatoos, dolphins, whales and many more birds and animals almost on a daily basis?! You thought that would be it but you can also see powerful blowholes, impressive waterfalls, visit significant cultural places, eat at great vegetarian cafes, hike in the bush, surf... A friend of mine living in Huskisson one day described it as "living in Paradise"... well I totally agree on that!

Growing up in Tanzania, I have fond memories of visiting our country’s various national parks and game reserves. My father used to fly bush planes such as Cessnas and Pipers from our home city of Dar-Es-Salaam to take us to the Serengeti, Mt. Kilimanjaro and Selous Game Reserve. I vividly remember being in awe of witnessing the great wildebeest migration in the Serengeti and the snow atop Mt. Kilimanjaro. Tanzania’s wildlife and warm culture is a beautiful ode to the rich culture that is a mix of Bantu and Arabic influences also known as the Swahili Coast. I hope this map evokes a sense of exploration and curiosity in you. Karibu Tanzania!

Bellin was an important maker of charts for the French Depot de la Marine. He was born in Paris in 1703 and educated as an engineer. He produced many important charts and published them individually and in compilations. The Neptune Francais was published in 1753 and the Hydrographie Francaise in 1756. His largest and most comprehensive work is the Petit Atlas Maritime with 581 charts (our copy has 582, including the rare "Carte Reduite des Decouvertes des Russe Entre L'Asie et L'Amerique.") that cover the coasts and important port cities of the known world. The Petit Atlas Maritime is probably the best compilation of plans of maritime towns and harbors of its time. Bellin died in Versailles in 1772. According to Tooley, Bellin issued an earlier version of this atlas in 1763 titled Petit Atlas Francois. The Duc de Choiseul provided financial support for the publication of the atlas. J. Arrivet is listed as engraver on the chart index pages and may also have engraved the charts themselves.
