Sushikyu was established in the Tenpo era of the Edo period, when the first owner Kuzo Morita, opened a sushi restaurant. It later became a cooking inn and also served as an inn for imperial messengers at its most prosperous from the Meiji to early Showa periods. The current building, which retains the appearance of those days, was restored and remodeled in 1989. The beams in the atrium are made of original zelkova wood used for the Ujibashi Bridge, which was granted to the restaurant at the time of the sengu ritual transfer at Ise Jingu in 1869. The signboard on the facade also retains the original appearance of the old days; the pay desk, furnace, dish cupboard, and statues of a cat and a mouse lying on the beams all evoke nostalgia. Iga kumihimo (braid) is a traditional craft of Mie Prefecture. It is made of silk, gold, and silver threads colorfully woven on a braiding stand (square or round stands/weaving or braiding machine stands). In particular, hand-braided kumihimo uses a large number of beautifully dyed silk threads to produce works with a unique texture and excellent elasticity. The origin of this craft dates back to the pre-Nara period when kumihimo was made for Buddhist ritual objects, as well as samurai armor and swords. In the middle of the Meiji period, it began to be used as ties for obijime (for kimonos) and haori coats. This led to the industrial formation in the Mie area and the spread of its sales channels to Kyoto, making it the largest production area in Japan to this day.
