Retro Japanese sweets tour map (KANMOORI area) thumbnail

The moat encircling area of Sakai City, where chin-chin trains run leisurely on the street. The moat encircling the city has a history of a unique culture that flourished in the moat encircling the city. From the ruins of Sen no Rikyu's mansion to a tour of Japanese sweets and temples associated with Akiko Yosano, this is an area where you can fully enjoy the culture of Sakai, an autonomous city that was connected to the rest of the world. We also recommend taking a short break at a pure coffee shop or an old-fashioned public bathhouse, and using a shared bicycle to get around.

This temple was founded in 1557 by Soto Dairin at the request of Nagayoshi Miyoshi, to pray for his father's happiness in the next world. After being burned down during battles in the 1615 summer siege of Osaka, prelate Soho Takuan was involved in rebuilding it. Its features include a karesansui rock garden that is a National Place of Scenic Beauty, the main hall, sanmon main temple gate and karamon gate that are all Important Cultural Properties, memorial towers for the Senke schools of tea ceremony, and the Jissou-an tea house that was loved by tea master Sen no Rikyu. A temple belonging to the Daitoku-ji-branch of the Rinzai school of Buddhism that was established in 1557 by Soto Dairin at the request of Nagayoshi Miyoshi, to pray for the happiness in the next world of his father, Motonaga. After being burned down during battles in the 1615 summer siege of Osaka it was relocated here and reconstructed by Soho Takuan and others. Its grounds include a karesansui rock garden that is a National Place of Scenic Beauty, the main hall, sanmon main temple gate and karamon gate that are all national Important Cultural Properties, memorial towers for the Senke schools of tea ceremony, and the Jissou-an tea house that was loved by tea master Sen no Rikyu. The karesansui rock garden in front of the abbot's chamber is thought to be from the early Edo Period (1603–1868) when the main hall and other structures were built. It has a wide area of white sand at the front and utilizes the rising terrain to incorporate a dry waterfall. It uses small stones to represent a flowing to the right-hand side. The “upstream” stone bridge and dry waterfall harmonize perfectly, and the arrangement of stones in the center is also wonderful. Combining a flat hira-niwa rock garden format with rock formations created a truly beautiful garden. Zen-style architecture was typically used in this prefecture, and this main hall is the only one in the region to use Buddhist architecture instead. On the ceiling inside there is an illustration called “happo nirami no ryu," which means “a dragon glaring in eight directions," which appears to glare at you no matter where you are viewing it from. The sanmon main temple gate is two-storied and has a handrail around the upper section in the romon style. It uses a Zen construction technique to fan out the rafters. Patterns carved into beams of the karamon gate that connect its pillars, and the kibana carvings that protrude from some of its beams, are shared by the main hall and the sanmon gate, suggesting that they were built at around the same time. There is a legend that military leader Ieyasu Tokugawa was stabbed by Matabei Goto during the summer siege of Osaka and then enshrined here, which contradicts established history. This temple is said to have been opened in 1562 by a priest of the Nichiren school of Buddhism, Nichiko. The large sago cycad tree in its grounds is 1,100 years old and has been designated a national natural monument. It is famous for its karesansui rock garden with sago cycad trees, which is the only such garden in Japan, and a Rokujizo lantern and a gourd-shaped water basin donated by tea master Sen no Rikyu, and as the place where samurai from the Tosa district (Kochi Prefecture) committed seppuku ritual suicide during the Sakai Incident. It is said to have been started in 1562 by a learned priest of the Nichiren school of Buddhism, Nichiko. A sago cycad tree that is more than 1,100 years old watches over Sakai from the temple's grounds. Nobunaga Oda, the warrior who is considered a unifier of Japan, had the huge sago cycad tree moved to Azuchi Castle, but every night it would cry, "I want to return to Sakai." This angered Nobunaga so he ordered it to be cut down. The tree bled from its cuts and writhed in agony like a giant snake, and Nobunaga, who had become afraid, returned the tree to Myokoku-ji Temple. This legendary tree is now a nationally designated natural monument. This famous tree of Sakai now has 120 large and small trunks and branches. During the Edo Period (1603–1868), it was described by the "Izumi Meisho-zue" text as having 22 large branches and 78 small ones, a total circumference of 25 shaku (about one foot) and a height of more than 22 shaku, and its foliage as being the green of a mountainside. In the temple's karesansui rock garden with sago cycad trees, which is the only such garden in Japan, there is a Rokujizo lantern and a gourd-shaped water basin that are said to have been donated by tea master Sen no Rikyu. The temple is also famous as the place where 11 samurai from the Tosa domain (in current Kochi Prefecture) committed seppuku ritual suicide in the Sakai Incident in 1868 after they killed and wounded 22 Frenchmen after the soldiers from a French battleship that had landed in Sakai Harbor obstructed their work of guarding Sakai. There is a stone monument outside the sanmon main temple gate that is dedicated to the Tosa samurai who died. The temple has entrusted to the Sakai City Museum the short sword “Kunimitsu” by the presumed founder of the Soshu blacksmiths Kunimitsu Shintogo, and the wakizashi short sword “Shumei Nagayoshi” by Chogi, one of the “ten disciples” of master blacksmith Masamune. They are important cultural properties. A Place of Scenic Beauty; the Myokoku-ji Temple garden has become a designated cultural property of Sakai City! It consists of the garden on the east side of the main hall and the stones placed around the nationally designated natural monument sago cycad tree. (April 2012) This famous place has been representative of Sakai since the Edo period. Results of a survey carried out in recent years revealed the garden to combine a flat hira-niwa garden with a stroll garden around a pond and a rock garden, that is centered overall around the placement of the sago cycad tree. Work was done to restore it to how it was at the end of the Edo period. As a rock garden centered on a sago cycad tree, it is unique nationwide and very valuable. This is the largest wooden building in the city. It is also called "the temple in the north." The current main hall was rebuilt in 1825. After being used as the Sakai prefectural office for 10 years after the abolition of the feudal domain system and establishment of prefectures in 1871, it was returned to the Pure Land school of Buddhism's Hongan-ji sect. The prefecture has designated it a historic landmark as the former site of the Sakai prefectural office. This is the largest wooden building in the city. It is also called "the temple in the north." The current main hall was rebuilt in 1825. It was used as the Sakai prefectural office for 10 years after the abolition of the feudal domain system and establishment of prefectures in 1871. At the time of the Meiji Restoration in 1868 Sakai Prefecture was only former imperial land, but by 1876 it had merged with Kawachi Prefecture, the four Tannan Prefectures, Nara Prefecture and others to become one of the prominent large prefectures in the Kinki region of western Japan. Sakai Prefecture ranged over a wide area and had its own independent administration, but due to a government policy of expanding Osaka Prefecture, in 1881 Sakai prefecture was merged into Osaka Prefecture. After Sakai Prefecture was abolished, the temple's grounds and buildings were returned to the Pure Land school of Buddhism's Hongan-ji sect, which currently owns them. Osaka Prefecture has designated them a historic landmark as the former site of the Sakai prefectural office. The temple bell in the bell tower bears an inscription dated 1617 that reads that after Nenbutsuji (a temple attached to Aguchi Shrine) was burned down during the 1615 summer siege of Osaka, the bell was recast at the request of Sakai officials who worked to restore the city and define its new role. It was moved to the Sakai Branch Temple during the anti-Buddhist movement at the beginning of the Meiji period (1868-1912). It is an important artifact that commemorates the history of the resurrection of Sakai at the start of the Edo period (1603-1868) and is also the oldest temple bell in the city. It is designated by the city as a tangible cultural property. Perhaps because it was created to resemble the previous bell that was destroyed in fire caused by war, it features a shape that closely resembles that of a bell from the Middle Ages. This shrine to originators of medicine for recovery from illness and protection from cancer, and for gathering the necessary hope for one's life, began when it enshrined a wooden statue made by Sugawara no Michizane that drifted ashore on a Sakai beach. It is known familiarly as Sakai Tenjin and the auxiliary Sakai Ebisu Shrine located on its grounds is famous as South Osaka's best "Ebessan." The two-storied romon gate is said to have been constructed in 1677 thanks to a donation from gunsmith Kanzaemon Enamiya. It is designated by Osaka Prefecture as Tangible Cultural Property. One of its features is that amid a complicated system of blocks and brackets that supports the eaves there is simplification of an architectural technique that utilizes a system of engraved decorative brackets in the shape of an elbow. It is valuable as one of the few romon gates in Osaka prefecture. This registered tangible cultural property located on the north edge of the Sakai moat region is known as a training center for Shugendo mountain asceticism and a teragoya school where Buddhist monk Ekai Kawaguchi studied. It can be seen on the Great Map of Sakai of 1689 under the name "Yamabushi Seigakuin" and has a history as a Shugendo temple. From the end of the Edo Period (1603–1868) to the start of the Meiji Period (1868–1912), under the name “Seikodo” it was a teragoya private school that taught local children to read and write. Ekai Kawaguchi (1866–1945), who was born in Sakai and was the first Japanese person to cross the Himalaya mountains to Tibet, also studied here. Located compactly on the grounds, in the style of a temple, are a main hall dedicated to the deity Fudo Myoo, a kitchen and a gate. It became nationally registered tangible cultural property in 2002 as a Shugendo facility that operated within an urban area during the Edo period, and as an important and rare example with the city of the existing remnants of a teragoya school. After the gun production methods of Tanegashima were brought to Sakai by people such as Matasaburo Tachibanaya, Sakai became Japan's leading gun-making area. The residence of Sekiemon Inoue is the only remaining example in Japan of an early-Edo Period (1603–1868) joint gunsmith's residence and workshop. As such it has been designated by Sakai City as Tangible Cultural Property and is known as "the gunsmith's estate." Gunsmiths and other related craftspeople gathered in the northern section of Sakai's moat area, where the Sekiemon Inoue residence is located, and specialization lead it to become a prominent gun production region within Japan. In recent years more than 20,000 old documents and historical artifacts related to Edo Period gun production were discovered on the estate. To broadly share these materials and an important building that is a place of actual traditional manufacturing, Sakai City is preparing to open, ideally in 2023, a facility tentatively titled the "Sakai Gunsmith's Estate Museum." The main building of the Yamaguchi residence was built immediately after the 1615 summer siege of Osaka burned down the urban area. It is an important cultural property of Japan and a place where you can feel the traditional way of life in a Sakai townhouse. It is extremely important as a rare example in Japan of an existing townhouse from the early half of the Edo Period (1603–1868) and in 1966 was designated a national important cultural property. In the Great Map of Sakai of 1689 the name of the Yamaguchi house, Echizen-ya, can be seen, showing that the site existed in its current location. After that, in 1775 the entrance area and the west storehouse on the south side were added, then in 1800 the north storehouse was added, completing the current layout. Fine beams are laid on top of an extensive dirt floor, creating a magnificent space. Centered on a large wax tree that is 200 years old, the garden shows a pleasing display of fall colors. • Old Sakai Lighthouse Old Sakai Lighthouse Sightseeing Facilities & Attractions

The symbol of Sakai, the old Sakai lighthouse. As the oldest, wooden, Western-style lighthouse in Japan, it is a nationally designated historic landmark. From the Muromachi period (1336–1573) through to the Azuchi-Momoyama period (about 1568–1600), as a naturally good port, Sakai harbor also developed as a port of foreign trade. The later connection of the Yamato River led to its decline, but repair by Edo merchants and the people of Sakai created the model that is the current former Sakai port. Thanks to donations from the people of Sakai, in 1877, a hexagonal, spindle-shaped, wooden, Western-style lighthouse about 12 meters in height was constructed on that seawall. The lighthouse protected the safe passage of ships leaving and entering Sakai harbor for about a century, but after land reclamation progressed in the vicinity, in 1968 that role came to an end. It is now preserved as a symbol of Sakai and is a nationally designated historic landmark as one of the oldest, wooden, Western-style lighthouses in Japan that exists in its actual location. After its deterioration had become clear in recent years, in 2001–2006 restoration work was carried out that returned it to its former appearance. Together with the nearby statue of the dragon goddess, it is being enjoyed as part of a new waterfront zone.
