Nanjo Kobo is one of the few factories that adopts traditional and handmade skills of making sound instrument for religious rituals. This special technique achieves special color expressions that digital printing can’t offer. It is possible since they have skills of dyeing various materials, from clothes of kimono to swimsuits or Western clothes. In the first floor, you can learn about a Kyoto’s ikat weaving called Nishijin-kasuri, and other products made of hand-dyed textiles produced by Itohen Universe. Craftsman will be welcomed to explain you about their product and show the sample book full of authentic pieces of Nishijin-kasuri fabric from Meiji-era (1868 to 1912). You can either join a natural dyeing workshop making your own hand-dyed fabric with the Nishijin-kasuri technique, or an information session of Nishijin-kasuri.  In the second floor, there are Japanese wooden looms and a special tool used for Nishijin-kasuri making. In 1905, Benrido began using the classic collotype printing technique which is known to produce varying shades as well as fine detailed prints. There are two guided tours: “[A]Meet craftspeople in the studio” and “[B]Learn about basic of weaving and dyeing of textile.” Both tours are followed by a workshop in which people can try making a silk tassel charm as an option (except for Feb. 28th). Using their original threads, they reproduced treasured fukusa (silk cloth) from the Tokugawa Art Museum which has been highly appreciated both in Japan and abroad. Since they merged their two factories, visitors can watch both hand and machine looms at one place. Its beautifully patterned grains and extremely durable traits are suitable for Buddhist altars, though it takes a large amount of time to craft, and requires a high degree of skills. Kichinosuke Sasaki, the founder of Shouraku Kiln, who was enthusiastic about Rikyu opened his kiln in 1905. Now, the 4th generation is taking over the tradition of Raku ware in Kameoka. Their president, Ichiro Mishima possesses three national certification as a bamboo craftsman and has been awarded as the “Excellent Master of Kyoto’s Craftsman.” The studio has been appointed as the bamboo specialist by Katsura and Shugakuin Imperial Villas, Kyoto State Guest House, Kinkaku-ji Temple (Golden Pavilion) and more. During the Open Factory period, you will be able to see the process of sword forging; multiple types of iron in the forge bellow to make them soften and shaping the sword by hammering.
