Malasaña holds the perfect harmony of the old and the new, and it’s the place I call home nowadays. I have been living in Madrid for a decade, and this is one of my favourite neighbourhoods. Bubbling with life at any time of the day and night it’s a place where you can find the trendiest people and places. Art exists inside galleries and museums but also in the streets, hip bars, pubs and cafes. My favourite thing are the contrast: the little old grocery shop next to the latest design shop, the bar that has been serving people for a 100 years (true story) packed with the trendiest crowd... If you’re into shopping here you will find the best vintage shops, and the newest design too. I have listed my favourite places in the area so you can have a complete day exploring: you can see art, grab a coffee, go shopping, have a bite, a drink and even dance all night.

Madrid: A day in hip Malasaña

This place is special to me because of the wonderful chilhood memories I have there. I grew up in Brussels and I remember my weekends being full of museum visits, bike rides and waffle breaks. What inspired me the most to create this map was to think about all the places I go to when I have international friends coming for a short visit and I have to introduce them to my hometown in only a weekend. You can be sure that food is always a big part of the experience!

This place is special to me because it has opened me the doors to the world of whales and has given me inspiration, good friends, illustration projects, work, contacts, relax, adventures and even an art exhibition at the Húsavík Whale Museum! Every time I’m there, I feel like being home and there is always something good to do! Go see the whales, relax at the sea baths looking at the bay, get inspired by the mountains, a coffee or a tasty lobster soup, explore the town museums, walk around the harbor or near the river, or just breathe and feel that you exist! This is my heart’s home, a place where I’ve always belonged to.

This place is special to me because it is where I studied and now spend most of my free time. We do not have many green or open spaces in Beirut but the American University neighborhood has it all: a botanical garden –which is also a cat haven, heritage buildings, an archeological museum, art galleries, excellent restaurants and coffee shops, a weekly farmers’ market and, last but not least, the seaside cornice – a beautiful promenade that leads to the iconic Rauche rocks site. One never gets bored in this area, never!

Welcome to my neighbourhood! The south part of Amsterdam is known for its 1930 architecture called the Amsterdam school. I feel so lucky to live in this beautiful area, i love to walk or bike around to discovering new details every time. This neighbourhood is very lively, with the architecture museum, the art house cinema and lots of cute café's. Every other year this area hosts the international sculpture biennial with larger then life sculptures decorating the streets. I hope you enjoy this walk as much as i do, have fun!

Amsterdam Art Deco Walk

This place is special to me because it was one of the most interesting places I visited during my 2017 solo trip in Japan. Naoshima definitely lives up to its name "Japan's Art Island" - where contemporary art meets architecture meets nature. The two GIANT pumpkin sculptures by one of the most acclaimed Japanese artists, Yayoi Kusama, were massive and became the symbol of the island. James Turrell’s work at Chichu museum and Minamidera blew. my. mind. The garden that built just like Monet's paintings was so beautiful. It felt like I stepped into his artwork! I also loved the beauty of simplicity and the creative use of natural light in Tadao Ando’s architecture. And of course - the delicious food and friendly people there. Spend a day on Naoshima next time you are in Japan. You won’t regret it!

Take a tour of Revolutionary Paris, the home of the last queen of France, Marie Antoinette. Begin your tour at Versailles, a city within a palace, to witness the splendor of court life. Visit Tuileries Gardens where once stood the palace where the King and Queen were under house arrest. The Louvre used to hold the royal treasures, but became a museum during the Revolution. Eat at Café Procope, the oldest cafe in Paris, where the leaders Danton, Robespierre, and Marat met to discuss plans. You can eat at several establishments which serve Marie's favorite pastries, pistoles chocolates, and apple tea. Drive by and see the architecture, or visit the other sites which represent the more vivid parts of the revolutionary war that were inevitable, the change which was necessary to bring representation to all classes of people. Finish your tour by driving north to St. Denis Basilica, where the remains of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette are interred. This place is special to me because I have called it home for the last 12 years, and the sites and sounds have been profoundly influential to me as an artist. The city can be equal parts gritty and glitzy, and I have found the unique landscape and music culture has shaped my illustration style over my time as a Nashvillian. Even if you are not a country music fan, you can find something to love in this Southern jewel, including museums, great universities, historical sites, sports, and world class dining and drinking. Side note: If you are planning a destination bachelorette party, I hear Austin is really nice. ;)

Jeju Island is a beautiful island filled with history, nature and pop culture to the south of South Korea.  Small but dense enough in things to experience that there is something to do no matter the time frame.  Partake in the island's unique citrus fruit and decadent black pork, hike along it's many Olle trails or visit the Unesco site "Sunrise Peak", or visit one of its many unique museums, dedicated to a number of interesting subjects.
