Higo Bridge

During the Edo era, there was a warehouse of the Higo (Kumamoto) domains, hence the name of the bridge. In 1885, the Higo Bridge was washed away by a flood, and three years later it was rebuilt as an iron bridge. In 1926 it became a concrete bridge in the Spanish Renaissance style, and it has been replaced twice since then. The current design was renovated in 1994. The name is said to have originated from the bridge with the same name at the current Tenjinbashi Bridge in Tenma, which was called "Watanabe-no-tsu." In 1927, the bridge transformed into a beautiful neo-renaissance arched bridge. The current bridge was built in 1966 with almost the same design as the Higo Bridge, and with the development of the surrounding business district, the bridge gradually became more modern.
