A basically untitled map of the San Francisco Bay Area showing highways, bridges, settlements, relief,and numerous cute vignettes including a seagull cursing over missing his human target (Richmond), three oysters in beds (South San Francisco), and an explosion blowing a man of leisure sky-high (Hercules Powder Mill - near Pinole). Highlights the forthcoming (1939-1940) Golden Gate International Exposition (World's Fair) on Treasure Island.

San Francisco Bay Area (1893-1897)

This place is special to me because I'm in awe that such a little strip of coastline can hold all this abundance of wildlife and wonder. In one stroll you can experience ALL the weather, hike the trails, swim or enjoy the ocean, shop for eclectic local wares, eat home made food, and drink a locally brewed beverage. My children often have their classes on the sand dunes or watching the salmon spawn in the fall. I'm very grateful to live here.

Showing Disney scene & characters head towards golden Gate exposition. A promotional map sponsored by Standard Oil Company of California and Travel Tykes Weekly Magazine. The map is filled with vignettes in each of the states and provinces of Canada, showing Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck engaged in activities reflective of the tourism or indigenous commerce or industry of the state. 

Around borders there are comic strip panels from the Travel Tykes Weekly Magazine or from service stations are numbered & were to be cut out & pasted in proper place on the map. On verso shows Mickey and Donald at the Fair, featuring vignettes on the major attractions of the Golden Gate Exposition.

This place is special to me because it has opened me the doors to the world of whales and has given me inspiration, good friends, illustration projects, work, contacts, relax, adventures and even an art exhibition at the Húsavík Whale Museum! Every time I’m there, I feel like being home and there is always something good to do! Go see the whales, relax at the sea baths looking at the bay, get inspired by the mountains, a coffee or a tasty lobster soup, explore the town museums, walk around the harbor or near the river, or just breathe and feel that you exist! This is my heart’s home, a place where I’ve always belonged to.

<body>This is Meyer's grandest production, a real tour de force that has fifty maps of the Americas including thirty three maps that are derived from the Tanner/Mitchell Universal atlas maps of the various U.S. States and Territories, Canada, and South America and are dated from 1844 to 1854 (with most dated 1844 or 1845). Many of the maps in this atlas have Philadelphia as a place of publication (along with several other cities) indicating that there may have been an arrangement with Tanner and/or Mitchell to copy the maps. The U.S. maps dated 1844-46 all appear to derive from a late 1830s edition of Tanner's Universal atlas. Those dated from 1850-54 derive from the Mitchell and Thomas Cowperthwait issues of the Universal atlas from 1850-54. Espenhorst lists a separate atlas (3.3.3) published in 1860 with these U.S. maps only, titled "Grosse und vollstandiger Auswanderungs-Atlas fur Nordamerika." The Iowa, Wisconsin, and Texas maps are not copied from the Universal atlas, but all the others are almost exact copies and it is strange that no credit is given to Tanner or Mitchell. Notwithstanding that, the copies are beautifully done and in some cases (the California map adds an inset of San Francisco Bay not on the Mitchell version) superior to the American originals. Wheat misses the Tanner/Mitchell derivation in the two maps he cites. The other maps in the atlas are all superbly engraved and the city maps have exquisite views -- all combining to make this the finest German atlas of the mid 19th century. Full and outline hand coloring. Maps are bound in half leather marbled boards with "Meyer's Grosser Hand-Atlas aller Theile der Erde." stamped on the spine in gilt. Scarce.</body>

A bilingual map of Cardiff commissioned for the Roald Dahl 100 Wales centenary celebrations in 2016.

The map stretches from Roald's early years (and sweet shop escapades!) in Llandaff down to Cardiff Bay, where he took the paddle steamer to Weston Super Mare for boarding school. Digital / hand drawn typography and illustrations.

A beautiful example of A. J. Johnson’s 1866 map of Florida. This rare map offers a fascinating snapshot of this secessionist state shortly following the close of the American Civil War. Map shows the state in full with color coding according to county. Cartographically this map is
probably based on U.S. Land Survey charts commissioned in the mid-1850s. Makes numerous references to American Indian tribes and to forts and battles sites related to the Seminole Wars. Notes Lake
Okeechobee, the Everglades, the Indian Hunting Grounds, Biscayne Bay,
Tampa Bay and the Okefenokee Swamp. Also shows the course of a proposed canal route leading from Tampa to the Atlantic. The Arredondo Grant is included just to the west of St. Augustine. The Arredondo Grant was a layover of the Spanish Land Grant program, which bequeathed it to a powerful Spanish merchant - Arredondo. With incredible difficulty and protest, the land grants were dissolved when Florida became part of the United States. Nonetheless the Arredondo Grand proved tenacious appearing on mappings of this region well into the late 19th century. An inset map in the lower left hand quadrant details the Florida Keys.
Features the fretwork style border common to Johnson’s atlas work from 1863 to 1869. Published by A. J. Johnson and Ward as plate number 43 in the 1866 edition of Johnson’s New Illustrated Family Atlas. This is the last edition of the Johnson Atlas to bear the Johnson and Ward imprint.

Godwin's map is perhaps the largest and most profusely illustrated of all pictorial maps of San Francisco, with comic characters depicting different aspects of the city, a cowboy getting bucked off a horse, a couple dancing an exaggerated Charleston, dozens of whimsical vignettes with explanation text, illustrating both the modern city of San Francisco and its early history, including 1906 San Francisco's Earthquake and Fire. The streets, parks, local churches, schools, and government buildings are drawn to show the visitor. Noted: "The City That Knows How" and "The Ideal Convention City." Includes San Francisco: population, industry, products and postal services, and lists of banks and theaters.
