Take adequate rest and hydration to prevent heatstroke! NAGINATA HOKO The float takes its name from the long large pole and blade (naginata) attached to the roof. Naginata Hoko always leads the procession, not joining in the drawing to decide the order of the procession. This float always goes first, Also, Naginata Hoko is the only float among the 34 that has a real child riding atop as its sacred symbol (chigo).Chigo cuts the ceremonial rope (shimenawa) to start the procession. Kakkyo was very poor and couldn't afford to feed his family, consisting of his wife, child and mother. One day, he decided to abandon the child and dug a hole to bury him. While he was digging the hole, he discovered a pile of gold that enabled them all to live happily. The sacred deity on the float wears a long golden hat and has a fishing pole in her right hand and the captured fish in her left. The figure represents the time when he is about to enter Mount Omine for severe Buddhist training and he holds a Buddhist rosary in his left hand and an ax in his right as well as having a conch shell horn on his hip. A crecent moon and mountain (triangular shaped) on the roof represent the darkness in the mountains when Moshokun, pressed for time to reach the battlefield, mimicked a rooster’s crow so that the mountain gate would be opened even though it was not yet dawn. TAISHI YAMA When the imperial prince Shotoku (574-622 A.D.) commissioned the construction of Shitenno-ji Temple in Osaka, he went in to the mountains and collected material for its erection by himself. Based on this story, instead of pine, which all the other floats use, cedar was chosen to build this float. Take adequate rest and hydration to prevent heatstroke! TSUKI HOKO This float has a symbol of the crescent moon (tsuki) on top, hence its name. There is a small figure of Tsukiyomi (the Moon deity) in the middle of the sacred pole atop the float. The interior ceiling bears a painting of flowers and plants by Okyo Maruyama (1733-1795). IWATO YAMA The origin of this float derives from an ancient Japanese legend that the deity, Amaterasu Omikami, who is believed to have created Japan, was born in a cave. Unlike other Yama floats (i.e. carried on the shoulders of people), this float has wheels, like Hoko floats, and is pulled by people. Since this Yama float doesn't have a place to set the sacred pine tree like a general Hoko float, the tree is directly attached to the roof. A golden figure of an imaginary bird is attached to the front of the ship and the helm depicts a traditional flying dragon pattern decoration. There is a figure of the empress as well as three other deities, Isora, Sumiyoshi and Kashima, enshrined on the float.
