Otemon Gate

The Otemon Gate was restored in 1983 through civic efforts in a form close to its appearance during the era of Toyotomi Hidenaga. The paulownia crest displayed on the gate is said to have been inspired by the Dainagon-zuka burial mound. Along the eaves, roof tiles reproducing the same patterns as Toyotomi-period tiles unearthed through archaeological excavations are arranged. Castle Ruins Hall

This was the first public library, built in 1907 as a commemorative project celebrating Japan’s victory in the Russo-Japanese War within the grounds of Kofuku-ji Temple in Nara. At a time when modernization was advancing and Western-style buildings were increasing around Nara Park, the library adopted a Japanese-style exterior while incorporating state-of-the-art architectural techniques, making it an important example of modern Japanese-style architecture that respects Nara’s traditional landscape. In 1970, it was relocated to its current site, where it blends into the scenery of the castle ruins and remains well loved. It is designated as a prefectural cultural property, and the first-floor hall is open to the public on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Address 2 Shirouchi-cho, Yamatokoriyama City, Nara Prefecture Google Map Check with Google Maps Access Parking Business Hours 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (last admission at 4:30 p.m.) Admission Fee General: 300 yen / Students: 200 yen Regular Holiday Closed every Monday and on the fourth Tuesday of each month (open if the day falls on a public holiday) Phone Number URL SNS

Gokuraku Bridge spans the inner moat surrounding the main keep and was regarded as the formal route leading to the honmaru. Although it was lost following the early Meiji-period castle abolition order, the bridge was reconstructed in 2021, reviving its historical appearance. Archaeological excavations revealed that the bridge was rebuilt multiple times in the same location during the Edo period, and the current reconstruction is based on the scale of the bridge from the Yanagisawa era. Recent archaeological excavations have uncovered foundation stones of the castle tower, confirming that a tenshu once stood atop the base. From the observation facility, visitors can enjoy views of the Koriyama townscape as well as Heijo Palace’s Daigokuden, Yakushi-ji Temple, and Mount Wakakusa, while experiencing the history of more than 400 years through seasonal scenery such as cherry blossoms in spring, autumn foliage, and early spring plum blossoms.
