pottery village, Sumiyama
Sightseeing Spots
Sumiyama is a mountainous area located about 4 kilometers northeast of central Uji City and is widely known as a village of pottery. Situated at an altitude of approximately 160 meters, Sumiyama is a peaceful sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the city, where the clear blue sky meets the seasonal songs of birds. The production of "Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki" pottery began here around 1966. As its ideal creative environment gained recognition, many potters moved to the area, and by 1970, more than 30 kilns had gathered in Sumiyama. In 1974, the Sumiyama Pottery Cooperative was established, playing a vital role in the village's development. Over the 50 years since the first studio was built, Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki have taken deep root in Sumiyama, becoming a recognized local industry of Uji. While inheriting the long traditions of Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki, the works created here are remarkably diverse, and the artists of Sumiyama continue to challenge themselves to create new forms of expression every day. In the beautiful landscape of Sumiyama, wonderful pottery and the richness of nature await your discovery throughout the seasons. Byodoin Temple (World Heritage)
Sightseeing Spots
This used to be the country villa of a man named Minamoto-no-Toru, on whom the Shining Genji is purportedly modeled. Later, however, the villa was inherited by Fujiwara-no-MIchinaga, the imperial "kampaku" (chief adviser to the Emperor) at the time. In 1052 his son, Fujiwara-no-Yorimichi, turned the villa into a temple and renamed it "Byodoin". Byodoin has been called "the re-creation of Heaven" and the very finest elements of Imperial Culture were brought together to build the "Ho-o-do"(main hall). The spectacular architecture remains unchanged in the present and still overawes the modern-day visitor. Treasure house named the "Byodoin Museum, (Hosho-kan)" exhibited some national treasures such as a "Ho-o” (phoenix) and "Unchu-kuyo-bosatsu" (Buddhist saint). Other images have been restored by computer graphics and high quality images are on display. Are you familiar with the large stone monument standing in the middle of Tachibana-jima, an island in the Uji River? As the inscription on the front reads "Ujigawa Senjin-no-Hi" (Monument of the First to Charge at Uji River), it was erected to commemorate the numerous battles that took place on this land since ancient times. Address 〒611-0021 Kyoto, Uji, Togawa Google Map Check with Google Maps Access Parking Business Hours Admission Fee Regular Holiday Phone Number URL SNS
