Hanazono Shrine

The Guardian Shrine of Naitō-Shinjuku Originally dedicated to the Inari deity brought from Mount Yoshino in Yamato Province before the Edo period, this shrine has long watched over the Naitō-Shinjuku area. The original buildings featured an unpainted cypress-wood structure with a thatched roof—the worship hall adorned with chigi (forked finials) and the main sanctuary built in earthen storehouse style. Unfortunately, the entire complex was destroyed in the air raids near the end of World War II. The present shrine building was reconstructed in 1965. Within the grounds, you can find many stone monuments and artifacts. Among them, the bronze Statue of Chinese Lions (Kara-jishi) is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property (Sculpture) by Shinjuku City. Located in the heart of the bustling metropolis, the shrine is cherished as a peaceful oasis. Its grounds—where the past and present intertwine—offer a uniquely captivating atmosphere found nowhere else. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through Hanazono Shrine and discover its many charms. Juniso Kumano Shrine

Kumano Shrine in Junisha is said to have been founded in 1403 (Ōei 10) by Kurō Suzuki, who enshrined the deity from the Kumano Sanzan shrines in Wakayama Prefecture. During the Edo period, the nearby Junisha Pond and waterfalls became famous scenic spots, attracting many visitors. It is also recorded that the eighth shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune, visited the shrine while on a falconry excursion. The shrine’s parish area extends widely—from Yamate-dōri to the area beside Isetan Department Store, and from Kōshū-kaidō Avenue to Ōme-kaidō Avenue—making it well known as the guardian shrine of Shinjuku. In more recent times, Japan’s national women’s soccer team, Nadeshiko Japan, visited the shrine before their World Cup victory. Because they wore the Yatagarasu charm, which symbolizes divine guidance and victory, the shrine has since become popular among soccer players and others who wish to be led toward success and good fortune. Shinjuku Nishiguchi Omoide Yokocho (memories Alley)

This retro drinking district retains the atmosphere of old Japan. Its roots go back to the postwar years, when a marketplace of street vendors sprang up amid the burnt-out ruins of the city. Today, about 80 establishments—including around 60 bars and eateries specializing in grilled offal (motsuyaki) and yakitori—are packed into a compact area of roughly 2,100 square meters. The lively alley continues to embody the spirit of the neighborhood and has become a favorite spot for both locals and international visitors alike. Godzilla Head (Shinjuku Toho Building)

The symbol of the Shinjuku Toho Building, which opened on the former site of the Shinjuku Koma Theater in Kabukicho—Japan’s largest entertainment district—is the gigantic Godzilla head, known as the “Godzilla Head.” Standing about 12 meters tall, it’s roughly the same height as the Godzilla that appeared in the original 1954 film. Positioned about 50 meters above ground, it looks as if Godzilla is emerging from between the buildings. This striking sight has become a major new attraction for visitors to Tokyo.
