  • Senritsu Asian Carp Pond Senritsu Asian Carp Pond Outdoor Facilities

The "Senritsu Asian Carp Pond" was created to represent a modern garden. Instead of using natural stones, it uses hewn stones cut in straight lines and arranged like objects, depicting them as mountains and a natural landscape in which water springs and flows through a river to the sea. The designer, Rokuro Taji, said that the garden represents a new creation, an attempt to both inherit and break out of the traditional Japanese garden. The hewn stones looks like to have risen from the earth give the garden a sense of strength, and the carp swimming in the pond add a quiet yet dynamic touch. The Azalea Hill was created by planting a variety of azaleas, including horticultural varieties of Kurume azalea, hirado azalea, and satsuki, and visitors can enjoy a carpet of red, pink, white, and other diverse azaleas in full bloom. During the Edo period (early 17th century to mid 19th century), a gardening boom took place, and many varieties of flowers and plants were created as people competed with each other. Wouldn't it be interesting to think that the people of Edo also enjoyed azalea as we do today? In the Heian period (late 8th century to end of 12th century), "shinden-zukuri gardens," a palatial architecture, were created to accompany the residences of nobles. The garden is built in this style alongside the guesthouse. The firs and dogwoods around the guesthouse form a landscape reminiscent of the deep mountains, and the water gushing from the spring symbolizes the flow of time. The spring also the "source" of the Expo's Japanese Garden, which incorporates garden styles from four different periods. During the Heian period, gardens representing the Sea developed under the influence of mainland China. The stones standing in the "Spring Flowing from Mountains" represent islands, and the stone paving in the foreground is reminiscent of a sandy beach, representing the diversity of the coast. The aristocrats once used gardens like this as a place for ceremonies, entertainment, etc. Address Google Map Check with Google Maps Access Bampaku-kinen-koen Station on Osaka Monorail, Park East Gate Parking Expo’70 Commemorative Park's Parking Lot Business Hours Same as the Natural and Cultural Gardens and the Japanese Garden's business hours Admission Fee *Admission fee for both Natural and Cultural Garden and Japanese Garden required Regular Holiday Same as the Natural and Cultural Gardens and the Japanese Garden's business hours Phone Number URL https://www.expo70-park.jp/facility/japanese-garden/ SNS

Before the construction of the Japanese Garden, there was a large bamboo grove on this hill. This path is the recreation of one's homeland, and alongside the bamboo, senryo, manryo, nandina, and other plants are planted. It is a quiet stream that reminds of “Mono no Aware (an awareness of the impermanence of things).” In the tranquility of the well-tended bamboo grove, the sounds of "shishiodoshi", a water-filled bamboo tube clacking the stone, and streams can be heard from nowhere, adding to the sense of serenity. From the central rest area, visitors can see for themselves that the garden is built in "chisenkaiyushiki," a stroll garden style with a central pond, stone masonry, trees, and yukimi lanterns against the backdrop of miniature hills. This style is a fine example of mature stage of Japanese gardens, and is the largest area of our garden. Visitors can enjoy the culmination of the Japanese garden by walking around the garden path and fully appreciating the changing scenery. In the Edo period, many gardens like this were created by lords who were in charge of gardens, and they were used not only for viewing but also as the entertainment venues. show stroly map Show Stroly map

The tea house "Senri-an" is modeled after the Hojo (living room) of a Zen temple. During the Muromachi period (early 14th century to late 15th century), a "karesansui" (dry landscape garden) developed, symbolizing mountains and water in a natural landscape with stones, sand, plants, and trees, without using water in a small space. "Zen" monks would carry out "zazen" (meditation) in front of the garden. At first glance, the garden looks simple and unvaried, but it shows us different colors, including shades of sand patterns caused by the changing sun, various greens of plants, and the blue of the sky spreading over the hedges. Seeing the beauty in the simplicity is with the "wabi" spirit of Japanese people. *The Senri-an Tea House is usually closed to the public, but Karesansui garden is open to the public.
