Gotono Kakiuchi Ruins
Sightseeing Spots

Gotono Kakiuchi Ruins: A Historic Ironworking Village from the Late Yayoi Period The Gotono Kakiuchi Ruins are the remains of a village on a hilltop where ironworking is believed to have been carried out approximately 1,800–1,900 years ago during the late Yayoi period. In September 2012, the site was designated as a National Historic Site. Excavations uncovered the remains of 23 pit dwellings, 12 of which were identified as blacksmith workshops where iron tools were crafted. Over 100 iron artifacts, along with numerous stone tools, were discovered, suggesting that this village had significant influence on surrounding regions as a center for producing the highly valuable iron tools of the time. The rarity of finding such a large number of blacksmith workshops in a single location, especially one that operated for over a century, makes this site an invaluable resource for understanding the social dynamics of the era. Both the ruins and the artifacts provide insights into the importance of ironworking in ancient Japan. Highlights: The site is designated as a National Historic Site, and the artifacts unearthed are listed as Prefectural Tangible Cultural Properties. Reconstructed dwellings, built using locally sourced materials, allow visitors to visualize life in the village. Regular events, including hands-on blacksmithing experiences, are held to educate and engage visitors about the history and techniques of ironworking. Yuzuruha Shrine
Sightseeing Spots

Yuzuruha, the highest peak on the island, at an elevation of 608 meters. The deities are Izanami no Mikoto, Hayatamao-no-mikoto, and Kotosasano-no-mikoto. Reason for the Shrine According to the “Yuzuruhayama Engi (Mt. Yuzuruha Engi)” handed down at the shrine, the shrine was founded approximately 2,000 years ago during the reign of Emperor Kaika. The shrine was so revered that even Sei Shonagon's “The Pillow Book” says, “The peaks are Yuzuruha no Mine, Amida no Mine, and Iyetaka no Mine. In the Middle Ages, it was a major center of Shugendo (mountain asceticism) along with the Kumano Sanzan (three mountains of Kumano), and along the “Yuzuruha Kodo” path leading to the shrine from the foot of Mt. This road has served as a path of faith for prayers and as a way of life for local people. Former Kumano Shrine In the precincts of the shrine stands a monument inscribed with the words “Former Kumano Shrine” by the chief priest of Kumano Nachi Taisha. This shrine is the origin of Shugendo, or the Way of Mountain Asceticism, and it is said that the deities of Kumano crossed over from Mt. The shrine once flourished as a sacred site with 28 large temples built in the mountains, but was destroyed by fire during repeated wars from the Muromachi period (1336-1573) to the Warring States period (1467-1568). The “Grand Gomaku Ceremony with Lighted Lanterns” was revived after an interval of about 500 years. In 2008, a stone monument was erected in the precincts of the shrine in the hope that the shrine will be restored one day when the world is at peace, and in response to this wish, “Dainichi Nyorai” was invoked at the site in hopes of reviving Shugendo. In 2008, in response to this long-cherished wish, Dainichi Nyorai was invoked at this site in hopes of reviving Shugendo, and a grand “Gomaku Puja” was held by Kumano ascetics and mountain ascetics. This festival is held every year around the end of March, and ascetics gather from all over Japan. The goma memorial service is held in late March. On the second Saturday of April, a portable shrine is carried up the mountain for the spring festival. Hatsumode Mochiyaki Event (January) In Awaji, there is a custom of visiting alpine mountains on New Year's Day, and there is a legend that if you bake rice cakes and eat them on the mountain, you will be safe and healthy for a year. Yuzuruha is a typical example of this custom, and the Tabu no Mori forest in the precincts of the temple is filled with worshippers roasting rice cakes on an old tree. The summit of the mountain and the Peace Memorial Pagoda are also popular with sunrise worshipers. Big Gomaku Ceremony (March) Mt. Yuzuruha has long been worshipped as a sacred place for the five major mountain ascetic practices. However, after repeated attempts to rebuild the mountain during the Warring States period (1467-1568) and the subsequent separation of Buddhism and Shintoism in the early Meiji period (1868-1912) and the movement to abolish Buddhism in Japan (1868-1912), Shugendo declined and finally ceased to exist on Mt. In 2008, ascetic practitioners who sympathized with ascetic ascetic Chisen Yamada's aspirations for the revival of Shugendo at Mt. Spring Festival (April) At the spring festival of Sukuruha Shrine, an omikoshi (portable shrine) is carried to the top of Mt. At the top of the mountain, shrine maidens perform a dance to praise the gods and pray for the development of Awaji. This spring festival is also a ritual to report to the deity the birth of babies and newcomers to the shrine that year. Mountain Climbing Ceremony Autumn Niinamesai (November) To prepare for the full-fledged climbing season, the Yotsuruha Historic Trail, a path of ascetic practices, is cleaned and maintained, and then the mountain is opened for climbing around the end of November. The climbing season on Mt. Satsukuruha includes a safety prayer ceremony and a Shinto ritual for the new harvest festival, which is held during the fall, winter, and spring climbing seasons. During the season, more than 3,000 people from all over the country climb the Yotsuruha Historic Trail. The Society to Protect the Yotsuruha Historic Trail supports activities (mountain climbing, camping, outdoor activities, etc.) on Mt. Nushima Island
Sightseeing Spots

An island in the shape of a gradient ball, associated with the myth of the birth of the nation Nushima is a remote island located 4.4 km off the coast of Nada, Minami-Awaji City, and is connected to Nada by the Nushima Steamship from Nada's Habu Port. Legend has it that the island was the first “Onokoro Island” created by the gods a long time ago. There is a theory that the “swamp” of Nushima is derived from “Numahoko” in the “Myth of the Birth of the Nation”. The island still retains its natural state and attracts visitors as an undiscovered marine paradise. The southeast coast is dotted with rocks that surprise the viewer, including “Uetatejin Iwa,” which is said to be the model for “Amano-numa-phoko” and “Amano-no-mihashira” in the “myth of the birth of the nation,” as well as “Pingpu Iwa,” “Amida-bae,” and other brave and strange rocks. You may be able to catch the legendary fish - Numajima no Meiro - in the sea area. The island is said to have been the home of the ancient Amazons, and the Numashima Suigun (navy) was famous during the Warring States Period. Today, the majority of the islanders are engaged in the fishing industry, and the seafood that lands in Numashima Fishing Harbor throughout the year is highly reputed, with hamo (yellowtail) in the summer being particularly famous. History/Culture The history and beliefs unique to Numashima have been handed down to the present day, including the Kamitatekami Rock and Onokoro Shrine, both associated with the legend of the birth of the nation, the Ookami (Hidatateyama) mountain deity who is said to have built bonfires for fishing boats, and Numashima Hachiman Shrine, which is dedicated to the safety of navigation. There are also many historical sites on the island, including Numajima Garden, the oldest Japanese garden in the prefecture, a five-ring pagoda said to be the tomb of Kajiwara no Kagesutoki (in the cemetery of Jinguji Temple), and Renkoji Temple, where a monument to the ruins of Mushima Castle, the residence of generations of Numajima castle lords, still remains.
