SOURCES:Kyoto City Industry & Tourism Bureau TourismOne of the leading spots for its autumnal foliage. The “Yoshino-mado” (a circular window with a flat bottom edge) of the hermitage is known also as “a Rainbow Window” since the sunlight filtering through the green leaves outside are beautifully reflected on the window’s Shoji paper (translucent white paper) with diverse colors. It is also known as the convent of a tragic love. According to “The Tale of the Heike,” Gio, once a favor of Taira no Kiyomori (a warlord of the Heian period, 1118-1181), fled to the hermitage from the capital after Kiyomori’s turning unfaithful to her. Then she took the tonsure together with her sister, Gijo, and her mother, Toji, and spent the rest of her life as a nun.In addition to the principal image of the Buddha Dainichi , the wooden images of Gio and others are enshrined.Address32 Sagatoriimoto Kozakacho Ukyo-ku,Kyoto-shiBusinessHours9:00~16:30Access15minutes walk from the Kyoto bus and Kyoto city bus stop 「Saga Shogakko-mae」Closedday1/1PhoneNumber075-861-3574URLhttps://www.giouji.or.jp/List of Prof. Isoda's CommentariesSpecial Guest!! SOURCES:Kyoto City Industry & Tourism Bureau Tourism SOURCES:Kyoto City Industry & Tourism Bureau TourismThe main temple of the Daikakuji School of the Shingon Sect. The temple is a Monzeki temple, associated with the Imperial family, and is also known as the former Saga Imperial Villa since it was altered from Emperor Saga's (786~842) villa into a temple. The Osawa Pond, a place of scenic beauty located in the east of the precincts, is the oldest Rinsen-style garden in Japan, and modeled after Dongting Lake of the Tang in the Heian period (794~1185). On the shore of the pond, about seven hundred cherry and maple trees are planted , and one can enjoy the unchanged view of the scenic beauty from the Heian period. The pond is also famous as one of “Japan’s Three Best Observation Sites for the Harvest Moon,” and every year in mid-autumn, there is “Moon Viewing Night” when one can enjoy watching the moon from a boat on the pond. The Shinden Hall (Important Cultural Property) in the precincts was used the residence of a high-ranking lady, Tofuku Mon-in Masako who was a daughter of the second Shogun Tokugawa Hidetada (1579~1632) and Ogo (1573~1626), the third daughter of Asai Nagamasa (1545~1573). Its “Botan-zu (Peony Painting)” and “Kobai-zu (Red Plum Painting)” (Important Cultural Properties) by Kano Sanraku are known well. The temple enshrines the royally sealed sutra manuscripts by Emperor Saga and other emperors including Emperor Gokogen, Emperor Gohanazono, Emperor Gonara, Emperor Ohgimachi, and Emperor Kohkaku. This is why the temple is considered as the Konpon Dojo seminary for copying the Heart Sutra, which is widely worshipped.Address4 Saga Osawacho Ukyo-ku,Kyoto-shiBusinessHours9:00~16:30AccessShort walk from the Kyoto bus stop 「Daikakuji」CloseddayNothingPhoneNumber075-871-0071URLhttps://www.daikakuji.or.jp/List of Prof. Isoda's CommentariesSpecial Guest!! Special Guest!! Professor Michifumi Isoda from the International Research Center for Japanese Studies Introducing the fascinating tourist spots of Saga! SOURCES:Kyoto City Industry & Tourism Bureau TourismDuring the ancient times, the area of Adashino together with the areas of Toribeno and Rendaino had been known as” burial sites,” and there are approximately 8,000 stone pagodas and buddhas lined in the precincts as the tombs of those buried in Adashino. The origin of the temple dates back to the time when the priest Kukai (Kobo Daishi)(774-835) buried the remains left and exposed in the area, and built a temple named Gochizan-nyorai-ji. Later the priest Honen opened a training hall for nenbutsu (chanting), and the temple’s name was changed to the current one. It is now a temple of the Jodo Sect. On Aug. 23 and 24 every year when a Buddhist annual memorial service “Sento Kuyo” takes place, a considerable number of candles are lit around those stone pagodas and buddhas.Address17 Sagatoriimoto Adashinocho Ukyo-ku,Kyoto-shiBusinessHours(Mar.-Nov.)9:00~16:30(Dec.- Feb.)9:00~15:30Access5minutes walk from the Kyoto bus stop 「Toriimoto」CloseddayNothingPhoneNumber075-861-2221URLhttp://www.nenbutsuji.jp/List of Prof. Isoda's CommentariesSpecial Guest!!
