In the Sengoku period, in Daiei 2 (1522), Takeda Motomitsu, the guardian of Wakasa, constructed a castle (the former Obama Castle) on Mt. Goseyama, a mountain steeped in Manyo poetry, located south of present-day Obama City. Later, in Tensho 1 (1573), the castle was reinforced by Niwa Nagahide, who took control of the region. However, starting in Keicho 6 (1601), the construction of Unpin Castle (the current Obama Castle) led to the abandonment of the old castle, which had served as the residence for successive lords of Wakasa Province.
