The Kobe Maritime Museum is one of Kobe's most recognizable landmarks thanks to its white steel lattice roof, and is included in almost every postcard-like view of the city centre, featuring the Kobe Port Tower and surrounding area. This building came into being as part of the project to commemorate the opening of Kobe's port, centered around the concept of "Kobe starting from the sea and a port, and advancing toward the future." The museum introduces the structure of ships, stand-out cruise liner charms, port facilities and roles, and chronicles how the city has changed over time in a user-friendly manner. These exhibits are complemented by genuine navigational instruments, diorama shop models, imagery and other graphics. The City of Kobe also preserved part of the Meriken wharf that collapsed during the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake to convey the impact of the disaster to visitors and pass the knowledge on to future generations at what is now called Kobe Port Earthquake Memorial Park. The Moegi (meaning 'yellow-green') House was built to house the Consul-General of the United States in 1903 and designated an important national cultural asset in 1980. A wooden two-story foreign hall, it is built in the shitami itabari style (wooden board siding with battens) and featuring two different bay (overhanging) windows. The residence also boasts innumerable premium design fixtures: the staircase with an arabesque pattern and a heavy mantlepiece among others, while the second-floor veranda offers matchless views of Kobe's urban center. The first foreign house to be opened to the public in Kobe and formerly a luxury rental house for foreigners. Since the slate cladding on the exterior walls resembles fish scales, the house is widely nicknamed 'Uroko-no-ie' (literally, 'house of the scales'.) Interspersed among the interior exhibits, one of the stand-out items is the Western porcelain collection, which includes solid antique furniture, furnishings and old Meissen porcelain objects. The exhibits in the observatory gallery adjacent to Uroko-no-ie, meanwhile, feature Western paintings from the naturalism era to the present day, with works by the Yasui Award-winning painter Masaru Horie representing Kobe. The England (former Hodesekku) House, featuring a pavilion designed by a British engineer in the colonial style with a beautiful balcony, has been preserved in its original 1909 form. This property is the former Chinese Consulate used in 1940 when the Chinese politician Wang Chao-ming established a Japanese-friendly in Nanjing.
