Takasago City of Marriage Map

Takasago City of Marriage Map thumbnail

It is the birthplace of 'Takasago', which is used as a generic term for a congratulatory term, such as 'Takasago no seki' for the seat where the bride and groom are seated, and there are many traditions relating to the tying of the knot from ancient times. In recent years, it has also attracted attention as the birthplace of Miyamoto Musashi. The city is full of history, knots and miracles, such as the Ishi no Hoden, one of the three strangest power stones in Japan.

According to the shrine's legend, during the reign of the 10th Emperor Sujin, who was honored as Emperor Hatsu-Kuni-Shirasu-Sumeramikoto (the august founder of the country), a plague spread throughout Japan and threatened the country with the extinction of its people. One night, two deities appeared in the Emperor's dream and gave him an oracle; "If our spirits are worshiped and enshrined, peace will reign over the land." Oshiko Shrine was then built here. Temples Jikoji Temple is called "Zenkoji Temple of Harima." About 400 years ago, there was an old and devoted Buddhist practitioner in Hyogo-no-Ura who visited Zenkoji Temple in Shinano (present-day Nagano Prefecture) every year without fail. One day, however, Zenkoji Nyorai, the Buddha of Zenkoji, felt pity for the old man who had to travel a long way to make a pilgrimage to the temple. Nyorai then told him to visit Jikoji Temple from now on because the same Amida (the Buddha of limitless light) of the Zenkoji Temple simultaneously resides at Jikoji Temple.
