Michi-no-Eki (Roadside Station) Seishu-no-Sato / Flower Hill Museum / Shunrinken Sightseeing Spot
Discover the achievements of Hanaoka Seishu, a "saint doctor" renowned for his many grand achievements at Seishu-no-Sato. The Flower Hill Museum is located inside a unique building designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa with inspiration from the "mandarage" flower. The museum has a park surrounded by greenery where visitors can enjoy themselves throughout the day. Hanaoka Seishu created the anesthetic Tsusensan after spending many years in the development with the devoted help of his mother and wife. With the achievement, Seishu became the first person in the world to successfully perform surgery to remove breast cancer under general anesthesia. Shunrinken is a group of buildings that served as Seishu's residence and clinic, as well as a medical school at that time. Many young aspiring doctors and patients began to visit Shunrinken with the times, which resulted in saving many lives and producing descendants who later taught medical art in Japan. The current Shunrinken is a restored building from such time and has been designated as a Cultural Property of Kinokawa City. Togenkyo Sightseeing Spot
Togenkyo is a treasure of Momoyama-cho, the hometown of peaches, in Kinokawa City. From late March to early April each year, visitors enjoy the scenery of peach fields in full bloom, known as “a hundred thousand peach trees at a glance.” On certain days, the fields are covered in a haze that reflects the pink peach blossoms and filled with a delicate, sweet fragrance. The scenery truly evokes Togenkyo (a fairyland), another world away from the real world. Such a utopia surrounded by a warm, serene atmosphere exists here in Momoyama-cho, Kinokawa City. The peaches grown in Togenkyo are known as "Arakawa Peaches" in Japan. The quality and deliciousness of Arakawa Peaches are due to the well-draining soil in the basin of the Kinokawa River containing sand gravel, as well as the town's mild climate. Tatsuno Toi / Odai Irrigation Canal: World Heritage Irrigation Structure Sightseeing Spot
The Odai Irrigation Canal has been supporting agriculture in the Kinokuni (a former name of Wakayama) regions as an artery for irrigation. Tatsuno Toi, along with some other water bridges, still exists today and continues to transport water from the Kinokawa River. Saizo Ohata, who was promoted to an official in charge of constructing the Odai Irrigation Canal, invented mizumoridai (a water-leveling instrument), which he used to survey the area accurately despite the lack of maps or machines at the time. Furthermore, by using a siphon method called fusekoshi, he was able to run water under the bottom of the river, contributing to the development of new rice paddies around the Kinokawa River. These civil engineering techniques have been passed down to the following generations, and a monument to commemorate Saizo’s achievements still stands in the precincts of Kokawadera Temple. The Odai Irrigation Canal currently has 11 water bridges and 10 siphons, four of which are registered as Tangible Cultural Property. The canal was also registered as a World Heritage Irrigation Structure in 2017. Among those, Tatsuno Toi located in Kinokawa City is an irrigation channel that crosses the Anabushi River, which carries water from the Kinokawa River. The 21-meter-high brick structure without piers is a sight to behold. AddressNisinoyama, Kinokawa, Wakayama 649-6604 Websitehttp://odaiyousui.com/
