Enriquillo Lake Road Trip from Paraíso, Barahona
Lago Enriquillo (Enriquillo Lake), located in the southwest of the Dominican Republic, is the largest lake in the Caribbean, with a surface covering over 350 square kilometers (135 square miles), and also the region’s sole body of water located more than 43 meters (140 feet) below sea level. It was named after Enriquillo, the first Taino chief who successfully revolted against Spanish colonialists. The lake and its surrounding lands are very rich in biodiversity and are ideal for wildlife watching and nature exploration. On the way to the lake from Paraíso in the Province of Barahona, there are many beautiful places beaches, rivers, lagoons, forests, and fauna as well as curious places like the Magnetic Pole and historic places like the Indigenous' Caritas, a cave containing petroglyphs across the walls, faces (caritas) suggesting the presence of Tainos thousands of years ago.
