Malasaña holds the perfect harmony of the old and the new, and it’s the place I call home nowadays. I have been living in Madrid for a decade, and this is one of my favourite neighbourhoods. Bubbling with life at any time of the day and night it’s a place where you can find the trendiest people and places. Art exists inside galleries and museums but also in the streets, hip bars, pubs and cafes. My favourite thing are the contrast: the little old grocery shop next to the latest design shop, the bar that has been serving people for a 100 years (true story) packed with the trendiest crowd... If you’re into shopping here you will find the best vintage shops, and the newest design too. I have listed my favourite places in the area so you can have a complete day exploring: you can see art, grab a coffee, go shopping, have a bite, a drink and even dance all night.

Madrid: A day in hip Malasaña

This place is special to me because it is where I studied and now spend most of my free time. We do not have many green or open spaces in Beirut but the American University neighborhood has it all: a botanical garden –which is also a cat haven, heritage buildings, an archeological museum, art galleries, excellent restaurants and coffee shops, a weekly farmers’ market and, last but not least, the seaside cornice – a beautiful promenade that leads to the iconic Rauche rocks site. One never gets bored in this area, never!

Ras Beirut

Clinton Hill is a treelined Brooklyn neighborhood where artists, writers, makers, students and creatives have lived throughout history, and continue to make their marks today. Spaces for creating, thinking, and collaborating dot the map, creating an atmosphere that's ever-evolving against a backdrop of historic brick row houses and brownstones.

My map depicts the many cafes and community spaces that celebrate the arts, and even a few places that do both (like the women-run Relationships cafe and Playground Coffee Shop). These are places where you can sip coffee surrounded by modern art, places that imagine a more intentionally-designed food system, shops with vintage clothing and furniture, destinations for modern art and music, and even a few historic (maybe unofficial) arts landmarks. It's a special place that has fueled my creativity for years, and I hope you'll find some inspiration here, too.

Coffee, Art and Design in Clinton Hill

The moat encircling area of Sakai City, where chin-chin trains run leisurely on the street. The moat encircling the city has a history of a unique culture that flourished in the moat encircling the city. From the ruins of Sen no Rikyu's mansion to a tour of Japanese sweets and temples associated with Akiko Yosano, this is an area where you can fully enjoy the culture of Sakai, an autonomous city that was connected to the rest of the world. We also recommend taking a short break at a pure coffee shop or an old-fashioned public bathhouse, and using a shared bicycle to get around.

The first edition of Dig the LOCAL, produced by Stroly, features Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture. Tokushima City, branded as "Tokushima, the Water City of Dancing Hearts," is popular for its wide variety of activities. The coffee culture is deeply rooted in the city, ranking first in Japan for coffee consumption per capita and the number of bakery stores per capita! This project aims to propose new tourism experiences that connect such activities and coffee shop culture in Tokushima City and to promote wide awareness of the city. Introducing places where you can experience Tokushima City's local cafes, coffee shops, bakeries, and activities, this map media allows you to enjoy Tokushima City all day long. Find your favorite new place to work. 
Reset was created out of our co-founders' mutual struggle to find a good place to work. We tried coffeeshops, we tried expensive coworking spaces and we tried staying at home - but none of those really worked. Spaces were either too crowded, too loud, too expensive or just plain boring.

During dinner at an especially stunning East Austin restaurant, we looked around and realized we had already found a beautiful workspace. Gorgeous windows, comfortable seats and all the space we would ever need - all sitting empty during the day when the restaurant wasn't open.

The rest of the story includes a lot of hustle, countless conversations with restaurant owners and user research. 
 
In the end, Reset is a way for people to experience new spaces in their local communities and get their work down - without breaking the bank. 
 
Our focus is and will always be on helping our members do their best work, and experience new spaces right in their neighborhood.

Museum Hopping Map

A very interesting 1853 (Kaei 6) Japanese world map by Suido Nakajima. Presented on a cylindrical projection, this map marks a significant advancement in Japanese globular cartography and a far more sophisticated adaptation of western cartographic standards than is evidenced in most earlier Japanese world maps. No longer reliant on 17th century Dutch maps acquired via the Dutch East India Company’s (VOC) trade concession in Nagasaki, the Japanese have here abandoned many of the antiquated cartographic notions, such as an insular California, which were common in Japanese maps of the previous decade. Japanese cartographers may have been motivated to update their traditional world view in the light of the explosion of cartographic ideas associated with the arrival in Edo Harbor of the American Commodore Matthew Perry in the same year this map was published. As a whole this map offers a sophisticated cartographic presentation of the world embracing the most up to date cartographic knowledge available in the mid-19th century. Though adapted to the Japanese printing style, this map presents a generally accurate world view. British Claims to Washington and British Columbia are noted in North America, Australia and the Pacific are accurately rendered, as are the discoveries of Vitus Bering and James Cook in the Arctic, and Africa is clearly pre-Speke. The disputed East Sea / Sea of Japan / Sea of Korea is here labeled as the Sea of Joseon (Korea), which some scholars suggests indicates Japanese acceptance of the “Sea of Korea” convention. Four hemispheres appear in the lower left quadrant, from left, the southern, northern, eastern, and western. All are on a stereographic projection. The map is printed on woodblock and hand colored in vivid, blues, greens, oranges, and yellows. A fine example of the redefined Japanese cartography style of the later Tokugawa period.

Map is projected as a view from space and details the world roughly from the Equator to the North Pole and from California to India. Flora, fauna, historic events, cultural artifacts, and indigenous people are represented pictorially. The Sargasso Sea is illustrated in the middle of the Atlantic. Includes inset views illustrate places and moments of special interest including mirages in the Pacific, a ship burning at sea, Niagara Falls, Chicago, oil wells, gold mining, Hindu cremation, Chinese Junks, Tuareg warriors, an avalanche, etc. also includes lists of the nations and maritime flags. Shows sketches of some 79 individuals in 'traditional costumes'. To either side of the main view are flags of major nations, sailing ships, volcanoes, and other imagery. Include an ice free polar sea north of Greenland labeled 'Mer Libre?' No doubt this is a nod to hopes that a Northwest Passage might still exist. Union Pacific and Trans-Atlantic shipping lanes are noted. The achievements of various explorers are noted in both Africa and the Arctic.
