Kinki traffic birdeye view map (1926)

Pictorial view of the world. Originally issued uncolored, color was added later. Map is projected as a view from space and details the world roughly from the Equator to the North Pole and from California to India. Flora, fauna, historic events, cultural artifacts, and indigenous people are represented pictorially. The Sargasso Sea is illustrated in the middle of the Atlantic. Includes inset views illustrate places and moments of special interest including mirages in the Pacific, a ship burning at sea, Niagara Falls, Chicago, oil wells, gold mining, Hindu cremation, Chinese Junks, Tuareg warriors, an avalanche, etc. also includes lists of the nations and maritime flags. Shows sketches of some 79 individuals in 'traditional costumes'. To either side of the main view are flags of major nations, sailing ships, volcanoes, and other imagery. Include an ice free polar sea north of Greenland labeled 'Mer Libre?' No doubt this is a nod to hopes that a Northwest Passage might still exist. Union Pacific and Trans-Atlantic shipping lanes are noted. The achievements of various explorers are noted in both Africa and the Arctic.

Around the World in the Blink of an Eye, 1876

I grew up around artists, politicians, messy kids, ex-cons, cranky neighbors, activists and community busy-bodies. I was 4 months old when my parents moved our family from the suburbs to a house just two blocks shy of the projects in Knoxville, TN. Growing up, I never felt like my normal wasn’t “normal.” We were people learning and growing with the community around us. And Knoxville? It was changing. A slow, steady, thoughtful change. Over the years Knoxville has flourished in so many different ways while continuing to push for even more change. There were definitely moments when I thought for sure I would move. What can a small town like Knoxville offer me as an artist?! It turns out...a lot...even a living making art. I’m grateful for Knoxville and all of the ways it has taught me to love, learn, listen and grow. I was born/raised here, I've learned difficult lessons here, I've celebrated wins here, and I've felt the love of a honest/supportive community. Knoxville is home.

Black lives matter is now a movement around the world, mainly in the United States. It shouldn't be considered a "fire on the other side of the river"(Japanese way of saying "none of our business"). However, I also feel that it hasn't quite hit people living in Japan because there are fewer inspirations or triggers that made us take action. But we can start thinking about what we can do and improving the world to be a better place. This is a map that depicts 1.3km from Nijo St. to Shijo St. in the Kamogawa river area in Kyoto. On the Westside, I wrote the lyrics for The Beatles "Blackbird." On the Eastside, I wrote the full speech of "I have a dream" by Martin Luther King Jr. that was given on the steps of Lincoln Memorial in 1963. You will find the song and the audio of the speech in the Pins. During the process of making this map, I measured the distance of the length where the march took place, which is from the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial, to apply the same range to Kyoto. By walking through this section using the map, you can experience how people felt during the march 57 years ago. Paul MacCartney stated that the "Blackbird" of the Beatles was made for black women simultaneously (in 1968). Let's take our time, feel March on Washington, and think about the movement that is happening now. I hope Kyoto will continue to be a place where diverse values, cultures, and races meet forever.

Tsukuda, Chuo Ward, Tokyo. A mysterious area located at the northern end of Tsukishima. Tsukishima is known as the town of "monjayaki," but even though it's next to Tsukishima, Tsukuda does not have a single "monjayaki restaurant."

So, what should you do if you want to eat or drink in Tsukuda? I'll introduce the restaurants in Tsukuda, with my own comments as someone who has lived in Tsukuda for over 10 years.

Malasaña holds the perfect harmony of the old and the new, and it’s the place I call home nowadays. I have been living in Madrid for a decade, and this is one of my favourite neighbourhoods. Bubbling with life at any time of the day and night it’s a place where you can find the trendiest people and places. Art exists inside galleries and museums but also in the streets, hip bars, pubs and cafes. My favourite thing are the contrast: the little old grocery shop next to the latest design shop, the bar that has been serving people for a 100 years (true story) packed with the trendiest crowd... If you’re into shopping here you will find the best vintage shops, and the newest design too. I have listed my favourite places in the area so you can have a complete day exploring: you can see art, grab a coffee, go shopping, have a bite, a drink and even dance all night.

Madrid: A day in hip Malasaña

This place is special to me because of the wonderful chilhood memories I have there. I grew up in Brussels and I remember my weekends being full of museum visits, bike rides and waffle breaks. What inspired me the most to create this map was to think about all the places I go to when I have international friends coming for a short visit and I have to introduce them to my hometown in only a weekend. You can be sure that food is always a big part of the experience!

This map shows small cafés, restaurants and shops in my neighborhood which I love very much. They all are located along one street named Leipziger Strasse. During the Covid-19 crisis these small businesses are having a hard time. So I think is very important to support them through this difficult time.
